Mick Schumacher could soon return to the Formula 1 grid, this time with the incoming Cadillac team. The American manufacturer, which is preparing its entry into the sport for the 2026 Formula 1 season, has included the young German driver among the list of potential candidates for one of its two available seats.
Born in 1999, Mick Schumacher is currently competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) as part of the Alpine Hypercar program, but he has never hidden his ambition to return to Formula 1. The son of seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher believes he was unable to fully showcase his abilities during his two-year stint with the Haas F1 Team in 2021 and 2022.
The 2026 season will see two new grid slots open up thanks to Cadillac’s long-anticipated debut, and the brand—backed by General Motors—has confirmed that Mick Schumacher is on its shortlist of drivers being evaluated for a full-time F1 race seat.
Cadillac Team Principal Graeme Lowdon, speaking to German broadcaster Sky Deutschland, had words of high praise for former Ferrari junior Mick Schumacher. While he stopped short of making any formal commitments, Lowdon acknowledged that Schumacher’s prior Formula 1 experience and recent testing efforts have made a strong impression on the team.
Graeme Lowdon on Mick Schumacher’s potential with Cadillac
“Mick is fantastic. He’s a very likable person, and I really like him,” said Graeme Lowdon. “He’s still young—though not a rookie anymore, as he was born in 1999—but he already has Formula 1 experience. Sure, it’s been a little while, but he has stayed involved and kept himself sharp.”
The Cadillac boss confirmed that Schumacher has already carried out some testing work for the team, which demonstrates his serious commitment to their project. “He’s already done some tests for us, which shows how seriously he takes this opportunity. We really like him. He’s not a stranger to the team, he knows our position, and he’s clearly one of the drivers we’re considering. That said, it’s a long list.”
Mick Schumacher’s inclusion in Cadillac’s list of candidates reflects a broader driver market evaluation taking place ahead of 2026. The team is also looking at experienced Formula 1 drivers such as Finnish veteran Valtteri Bottas and Mexican racer Sergio Perez, both of whom could bring proven racecraft and leadership to the new team.
However, Lowdon also left the door open to younger talents from the feeder series such as Formula 2, suggesting that Cadillac might opt for a mix of experience and youth for their inaugural season.
Cadillac focused on car development before finalizing drivers
For now, Cadillac’s focus remains on ensuring the car is ready to meet the 2026 technical regulations, which will bring major changes to the power unit and chassis concepts in Formula 1.
“I think we’ll start to see some movement soon,” Lowdon added. “We hope the fans will forgive us if, for now, we are focusing more on the car than on the drivers. After all, if there’s no car, there are no drivers.”
While nothing is confirmed yet, the possibility of seeing Mick Schumacher return to Formula 1—especially with a manufacturer team like Cadillac—adds another layer of intrigue to the 2026 driver market. As the project continues to take shape, the next few months could be decisive for both the team and Schumacher’s future in the top tier of motorsport.
