From Spa nightmare to title contender: how Lewis Hamilton transformed Ferrari’s 2026 campaign
Formula 1 careers can change direction with astonishing speed. Few drivers understand that reality better than Lewis Hamilton, whose journey over the last twelve months has been one of the most dramatic transformations on the grid.
In the middle of the 2025 season, questions were being asked about whether the seven-time world champion could fully adapt to life at Ferrari. Today, Lewis Hamilton finds himself at the center of the championship battle, carrying Ferrari’s hopes against a resurgent Mercedes team and one of the sport’s most exciting new stars, Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
The contrast between those two moments could hardly be greater. What once looked like a difficult transition has evolved into one of the most compelling comeback stories of the modern Formula 1 era.
When Ferrari’s move appeared to be in trouble
Just a year ago, Lewis Hamilton was enduring one of the most challenging stretches of his first Ferrari campaign. The Belgian Grand Prix weekend at Spa-Francorchamps became symbolic of those struggles.
Qualifying performances fell well below expectations, and while Charles Leclerc was demonstrating the potential of the Ferrari package at the front of the field, Lewis Hamilton was finding it difficult to unlock the same level of performance.
The frustration was evident. Expectations surrounding the arrival of Formula 1’s most successful driver at Maranello had been enormous, yet the results were not arriving quickly enough to satisfy either the team or the driver himself. At the time, many observers wondered whether the adaptation process would take significantly longer than expected. Some even questioned whether Lewis Hamilton would ever feel completely comfortable within Ferrari’s technical environment.
Resilience becomes the turning point
According to Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur, the key factor behind the turnaround was not a single upgrade, setup change, or technical breakthrough. Instead, it was Lewis Hamilton’s ability to remain fully committed during the most difficult periods.
Frédéric Vasseur explained that the Briton continued investing energy into the project despite the setbacks. Rather than allowing disappointing weekends to damage his confidence, the British driver remained deeply involved with engineers, simulator work, and factory development programs.
That persistence eventually began producing results. As Ferrari gradually improved the SF-26 and Lewis Hamilton became more familiar with the team’s processes, the partnership started delivering the performances many had expected when the move was first announced.
The breakthrough victory in Barcelona became the clearest sign yet that the adaptation phase was finally over.
Why Mercedes still fears Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton’s resurgence has not gone unnoticed among his former colleagues at Mercedes.
For more than a decade, Mercedes built its Formula 1 success around the Briton, and few people understand his strengths better than Team Principal Toto Wolff. The Austrian has repeatedly highlighted how dangerous Lewis Hamilton becomes once momentum begins to build.
What makes the situation particularly interesting is that Ferrari is no longer relying solely on potential. Lewis Hamilton has returned to consistently fighting for victories, podiums, and championship points. His race management, tire preservation, and ability to deliver under pressure remain among the strongest attributes in Formula 1. Combined with Ferrari’s recent technical progress, those qualities have transformed Lewis Hamilton into a genuine championship threat once again.
After years of battling Mercedes in silver, the seven-time world champion now finds himself leading Ferrari’s challenge against his former team.
Charles Leclerc remains a crucial part of Ferrari’s future
While Lewis Hamilton’s recent performances have naturally attracted much of the attention, Ferrari continues to place enormous trust in Charles Leclerc.
The Monegasque driver has experienced a more complicated sequence of events in recent races. A qualifying accident in Barcelona compromised what had looked like a potentially front-row challenge, and further misfortune prevented him from converting his pace into a strong result. Despite those setbacks, Frédéric Vasseur remains convinced that Charles Leclerc is moving in the right direction.
The Ferrari team principal pointed to encouraging signs regarding Charles Leclerc’s confidence in the SF-26, particularly after the driver appeared increasingly comfortable with the car’s balance and overall behavior before his qualifying incident.
Importantly for Ferrari, the underlying pace remains evident. Charles Leclerc continues to demonstrate the speed that has made him one of Formula 1’s most respected qualifiers and race drivers.
A Ferrari team with renewed belief
The most significant development for Ferrari may not be the individual performances of Lewis Hamilton or Charles Leclerc, but the fact that both drivers appear increasingly aligned with the direction of the project.
Lewis Hamilton is now fully integrated into the team and delivering the results Ferrari expected when signing him. Charles Leclerc, meanwhile, continues working toward rediscovering the consistency that made him Ferrari’s undisputed reference point for several seasons. If Ferrari can continue improving the SF-26 while maximizing the strengths of both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, the Scuderia could become an even more formidable opponent during the second half of the Formula 1 season.
Only twelve months ago, Lewis Hamilton’s future at Ferrari appeared uncertain to some observers. Today, he is firmly established as one of the leading contenders in the championship fight and a central figure in Ferrari’s attempt to return to the top of Formula 1.
