Spanish GP 2026 results – Lewis Hamilton delivered a sensational victory for Ferrari at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, converting the Scuderia’s impressive pace into a memorable triumph after a thrilling and strategically complex race.
The build-up to the race had focused on several fascinating storylines. Ferrari arrived in Barcelona with a significantly improved SF-26, George Russell started from pole position for Mercedes, McLaren remained firmly in contention, while Max Verstappen looked ready to challenge from the opening laps. Charles Leclerc, meanwhile, faced the difficult task of recovering from tenth on the grid after his costly qualifying crash.
Tyre strategies immediately offered clues about the race ahead. George Russell, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Lando Norris, Isack Hadjar, Oscar Piastri, Liam Lawson and Charles Leclerc all opted for the medium compound to begin the 66-lap contest. Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen and Nico Hülkenberg instead started on the softer tyre in a more aggressive strategic gamble.
At the start, the leading positions remained unchanged, with George Russell holding the lead ahead of Lewis Hamilton, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Lando Norris and Max Verstappen. Behind them, Charles Leclerc enjoyed an excellent launch, immediately gaining three places and quickly setting his sights on Oscar Piastri.
While Andrea Kimi Antonelli briefly moved into the lead during the opening phase through the pit-stop cycle, Charles Leclerc continued his charge through the field. On lap eight, the Ferrari driver successfully overtook Oscar Piastri to move into sixth place and began closing in on Max Verstappen.
Lewis Hamilton’s race then became increasingly strategy-focused. Ferrari elected to pit the seven-time world champion as early as lap 12, switching him onto hard tyres and committing to what appeared to be a three-stop strategy. The move allowed Lewis Hamilton to consistently attack throughout the race while taking advantage of the SF-26’s strong pace.
As the race developed, the Ferrari driver repeatedly demonstrated outstanding speed. Following his second stop on lap 28, Lewis Hamilton immediately dispatched Oscar Piastri and rapidly reeled in Charles Leclerc before moving ahead. Once clear air was available, the Ferrari driver unleashed a series of extremely fast laps that brought him firmly into contention for victory.
Mercedes found itself managing an internal battle between George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, while Ferrari’s strategy continued to gain momentum. By the middle stages of the race, Lewis Hamilton had moved into the lead following the pit-stop sequence.
A crucial moment arrived on lap 41 when a Virtual Safety Car was triggered after Fernando Alonso stopped on track. Ferrari reacted instantly, bringing Lewis Hamilton into the pits and allowing him to retain the race lead once the field stabilised. From that moment onward, the victory was firmly in his hands.
After the restart, Lewis Hamilton produced a dominant display. He immediately extended his advantage over George Russell and consistently set the benchmark pace. Lap after lap, the Ferrari driver increased the gap, turning what had been a tightly contested race into a commanding performance.
Behind him, drama continued to unfold. Andrea Kimi Antonelli eventually overtook George Russell on track but suffered a heartbreaking retirement shortly afterwards due to engine problems. Charles Leclerc’s recovery race also ended in disappointment when the Monegasque driver encountered issues late in the event, ran off track and was ultimately forced to retire.
Despite a late Virtual Safety Car period and concerns regarding a possible investigation under yellow-flag conditions, Lewis Hamilton remained comfortably in control. The Ferrari star crossed the finish line nearly 20 seconds ahead of George Russell to secure a landmark victory for the Scuderia.
The win marked one of Ferrari’s most significant performances of the season and underlined the effectiveness of the team’s recent upgrades, while also confirming Lewis Hamilton’s growing confidence with the SF-26.
