Ferrari’s concern is no longer speed – it is Charles Leclerc’s reaction to setbacks
Charles Leclerc has endured difficult periods before during his Ferrari career, but his current run of form has sparked a different kind of concern inside Maranello.
The issue is not a lack of raw pace. In fact, few within the paddock doubt that Charles Leclerc remains one of the fastest drivers on the Formula 1 grid. The concern is instead centered on how the Monegasque driver is responding to a sequence of costly mistakes and frustrating results at a time when Lewis Hamilton is rapidly gaining momentum.
Since securing his last podium finish earlier in the season, Charles Leclerc has struggled to build consistency. A series of disappointing weekends, combined with accidents and missed opportunities, has prevented him from fully capitalizing on the potential of the SF-26.
What makes the situation particularly frustrating for Ferrari is that the Monegasque’s outright speed has often remained comparable to that of Lewis Hamilton. Yet while the seven-time world champion has steadily converted performance into results, Charles Leclerc has repeatedly seen strong weekends unravel due to errors or incidents.
Mistakes have become an unwanted pattern
The statistics paint a concerning picture.
Over recent race weekends, Charles Leclerc has made contact with barriers on multiple occasions across both qualifying and race sessions. Some incidents have occurred while pushing to extract the maximum from the car, while others have come at critical moments that significantly compromised his weekends.
Monaco and Barcelona proved particularly painful. Crashes during qualifying sessions left the 28-year-old chasing recovery drives instead of fighting at the front, while additional incidents elsewhere only reinforced the sense that momentum was slipping away.
For a driver known throughout his career for extraordinary qualifying performances and razor-sharp speed, the repeated mistakes have become increasingly difficult to ignore.
The challenge is amplified by the fact that Ferrari now possesses a car capable of competing regularly near the front of the field. Every missed opportunity therefore carries greater consequences than it might have during less competitive seasons.
Ferrari reportedly wants Charles Leclerc to be less self-critical
What has reportedly attracted even greater attention inside Ferrari is Charles Leclerc’s response after those difficult weekends.
Following another disappointing qualifying session, the Ferrari driver publicly expressed deep frustration with his own performance. His comments suggested a level of disappointment that many observers felt was unusually harsh, even by the demanding standards elite athletes often impose on themselves.
According to discussions referenced by Formula 1 broadcaster Tom Clarkson, Ferrari has repeatedly encouraged Charles Leclerc to take a more balanced approach when evaluating mistakes and setbacks.
Clarkson explained on the F1 Nation podcast that members of the team had indicated they regularly advise Charles Leclerc not to be excessively hard on himself. However, the impression conveyed was that the more they attempt to moderate his self-criticism, the harsher his personal assessment tends to become.
That dynamic creates a difficult situation. While accountability is generally viewed as a strength, excessive self-criticism can sometimes become counterproductive, particularly during a long Formula 1 season where confidence often plays a decisive role.
Lewis Hamilton’s resurgence changes the internal picture
The timing of Charles Leclerc’s struggles is particularly significant because it coincides with Lewis Hamilton’s strongest spell since joining Ferrari.
After a challenging debut campaign with the Scuderia, the Briton appears increasingly comfortable with the SF-26. Recent upgrades, technical changes and growing confidence within the team have helped the British driver rediscover the consistency that made him one of the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history.
His victory in Barcelona reinforced the perception that he is now fully integrated into the Ferrari project. More importantly, it increased the performance pressure on the opposite side of the garage.
While Ferrari continues to publicly maintain complete equality between its two drivers, the championship standings naturally influence the conversation. As Lewis Hamilton continues to score heavily, questions inevitably emerge regarding Ferrari’s long-term strategic priorities.
A crucial period lies ahead for Ferrari
Despite the recent difficulties, Ferrari’s faith in Charles Leclerc remains strong.
The Monegasque driver has earned enormous credibility during his years with the Scuderia and has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to bounce back from adversity. Few drivers on the grid possess his combination of speed, determination and racecraft.
That is why the team is far more concerned about confidence and mindset than outright performance. Ferrari knows that recovering psychologically from a difficult sequence of weekends can sometimes be just as important as finding lap time through upgrades.
Nevertheless, the next few races could prove pivotal. If Lewis Hamilton continues extending his advantage while Charles Leclerc struggles to reverse the trend, pressure will inevitably increase both inside and outside the team.
For now, Ferrari remains committed to supporting both drivers equally. But with Lewis Hamilton emerging as a genuine championship contender and Charles Leclerc searching for answers, the Scuderia faces an increasingly delicate balancing act as the 2026 Formula 1 season enters a critical phase.
