A few days ago, Scuderia Ferrari officially presented its car for the 2024 Formula 1 championship to the fans, both through an online video and on the track, with two laps at the Fiorano circuit. Immediately, enthusiasts and expert analysts started examining the innovations promised by Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur, the 95% that has been changed. At first glance, not only the livery colors but also the trays, the front and rear wings, and the halo attachment are different (as listed here), but Formula One journalist, illustrator, and sports commentator Giorgio Piola wanted to emphasize how the new strategies focus mainly on the non-visible areas.
“It seems like a meticulously studied single-seater in every detail. There has been a revolution, but the biggest one is under the engine cover, with the lengthening of the chassis and the movement of the engine farther back, as well as with the shortening of the gearbox. Probably, by lengthening the chassis, they tried to lower the center of the fuel tank. You can also see the nose is shorter than that of the SF-23: here it attaches to the first flap, not the main profile as last year. The square-cut frame has also been maintained, and the front suspension has been designed for better aerodynamic and anti-dive effects, as seen from the fact that the two arms of the upper triangle have been raised,” commented the journalist in a video for Motorsport Italia.
“The gearbox has been reduced by about 50 mm. I am intrigued by the pull rod system, which other teams have abandoned to have the narrowest possible gearbox area. On the other hand, the advantage is a low center of gravity. In the front, even the steering rack is the same as that of the SF-23: everything has been done to lower the car,” the expert concluded.
