Max Verstappen Considers Ferrari Move in 2027 as Red Bull Future Faces Uncertainty
Red Bull Racing may have averted the immediate risk of Max Verstappen leaving for Mercedes in 2026, but speculation over the Dutch driver’s future continues to grow. Sources suggest that a switch to another Formula 1 team is increasingly appealing to the four-time World Champion as he evaluates his long-term career prospects.
Mercedes’ 2025 season strategy left George Russell and rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli in a state of uncertainty. Team principal Toto Wolff had explored the possibility of the Dutchman joining the Silver Arrows, yet Wolff confirmed during the Dutch Grand Prix that Mercedes intends to continue with Russell and Antonelli. Both drivers are currently without contracts for the 2026 season, but Wolff’s plans to recruit Verstappen were halted after the Dutchman publicly committed to Red Bull for 2026 at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Verstappen is bound by his Red Bull contract until the end of 2028, with no available release clause for 2026. The 27-year-old’s contract includes a stipulation that he could only leave Red Bull if he were outside the top three in the 2025 F1 drivers’ championship at the summer break. Having secured his place within Red Bull’s lineup, Verstappen must honor the agreement for at least another year.
Ferrari Could Be a Future Destination for Max Verstappen
While Wolff engaged in discussions with Max Verstappen’s management over a potential move to Mercedes, the Dutchman and his father Jos Verstappen also explored the possibility of joining Ferrari, despite Lewis Hamilton only recently signing with the Scuderia alongside Charles Leclerc in 2025. Reports from F1-Insider indicate that the Dutch driver could be “waiting in the wings” to replace Hamilton at Ferrari in 2027, once the Briton’s initial two-year contract comes to an end.
The idea of Verstappen moving to Maranello has gained traction as Ferrari’s performance with the Briton has not met expectations. Lewis Hamilton’s debut season in red has been challenging, highlighted by a crash at the Dutch Grand Prix, marking his first retirement as a Ferrari driver, and consecutive races without scoring points, including a P12 finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix. These struggles have sparked questions over the effectiveness of Ferrari’s current driver lineup.
Red Bull’s 2026 Engine Challenge Could Influence Verstappen’s Decision
Max Verstappen’s long-term future may hinge on Red Bull’s ability to adapt to the new 2026 F1 technical regulations. The team is developing its own power unit for the first time, and early projections suggest that performance issues could emerge. If Red Bull fails to deliver a competitive package under the 2026 rules, Verstappen would have the option to leave the team after the season if he finishes outside the top two in the drivers’ standings.
Although Red Bull can take comfort in knowing Max Verstappen will remain with them for the 2026 season, experts believe that retaining him may only postpone an eventual move should the team struggle to provide a title-contending car. The Dutchman’s interest in Ferrari remains a key talking point, especially if Lewis Hamilton decides to retire after the 2026 season, as Ferrari would likely view Verstappen as a prime candidate to secure their long-term championship ambitions.
Ferrari’s Interest Intensifies if Lewis Hamilton Steps Aside
Hamilton’s underwhelming start at Ferrari, compounded by the Dutch GP crash and other recent disappointments, has fueled speculation that Ferrari may actively pursue Verstappen in 2027. The seven-time F1 World Champion’s contract includes an option to extend beyond 2026, but his first year at Maranello has struggled to meet expectations, leaving the door open for Red Bull’s star to potentially make the switch.
With Max Verstappen’s Red Bull contract guaranteeing his presence through 2026, the next season could prove pivotal for both the Dutch driver and his current team. Formula 1 fans and analysts are closely watching developments, with Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull all potentially playing critical roles in shaping the driver market for 2027.
