Who is Loic Serra, Ferrari’s new technical director
At 52 years old, with a degree in mechanical engineering and 18 years of experience in Formula 1, having already worked with BMW-Sauber and Mercedes, Loic Serra is now Ferrari’s new technical director for the chassis area. The Frenchman joined the Maranello team in 2023 but will be operational starting October 1 due to gardening leave. He will work on the 2025 car.
Loic Serra’s profile
Born in 1972, Loic Serra studied in Aix-en-Provence and Paris. Right after university, in 1996, he was hired by Michelin, where he honed his knowledge of tires and suspensions over a decade. At the French multinational, Loic Serra met current Red Bull technical director Pierre Waché, whom he would later meet again when transitioning to a Formula 1 team in October 2006, when Loic Serra joined BMW-Sauber as head of performance. In 2010, he moved to Mercedes, where he was one of the key figures in the team’s seven-year championship-winning streak. Until January 2013, he was “Chief Engineer Vehicle Engineering,” from then until December 2018 “Head of Vehicle Dynamics,” and finally performance director.
Loic Serra was the first major hiring of the Frederic Vasseur era at Ferrari, a period marked by notable departures (with Mattia Binotto, Laurent Mekies and David Sanchez quickly followed, heading to Red Bull and McLaren respectively). The new technical director’s arrival preceded that of Lewis Hamilton by six months, who will rejoin him at Maranello starting in January 2025.
Loic Serra therefore replaces Enrico Cardile, the last major figure to leave Ferrari (heading to Aston Martin). Reporting to him will be the divisions of Chassis Project Engineering (led by Fabio Montecchi), Vehicle Performance (led by Marco Adurno), Aerodynamics (led by Diego Tondi), Track Engineering (led by Matteo Togninalli), and Chassis Operations (led by Diego Ioverno, who will also remain Sporting Director).
