Not the best of Fridays for Ferrari in Canada, with Lewis Hamilton revealing his target for qualifying.
The Canadian GP weekend seems to be filled with tension at Ferrari, between rumors of Fred Vasseur possibly leaving and a SF-25 that’s clearly not at ease. The goal for Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc will be to secure a decent result in qualifying.
Doing so won’t be easy, especially considering that the Monegasque driver was barely on track. After his crash early in FP1, Charles Leclerc had to watch the second session from the garage, in accordance with the regulations. This clearly disrupted Ferrari’s Friday program, leaving them with many questions just an hour before qualifying.
Lewis Hamilton’s comments after free practice
At the end of the first two practice sessions, where he finished fifth and eighth, Lewis Hamilton spoke about the feeling he had around the Montreal circuit: “It didn’t go very well. I love driving here because there’s always an incredible atmosphere. But the car gave me a different feeling compared to previous years. In the first session I felt comfortable. Then we made some changes that felt like they made the car faster, but in reality, we were slower—or maybe others improved more than we did,” said the Briton.
“To be honest, I think getting into Q3 will be a challenge, but it’s not impossible. So yes, I think the goal has to be the top ten. It’s going to be tough,” he added.
These statements once again highlight the current situation inside the Ferrari garage. In just over three months, the team has gone from “we’re winning both championships” to “let’s try to get into Q3.” A shift in objectives that only fuels the ongoing controversy surrounding Maranello’s team since Bahrain testing.
