During the recent pre-season testing in Bahrain, Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur praised the team’s approach for the 2026 season and highlighted a key principle: “If you want to win, you have to take risks.”
Vasseur spoke proudly of Ferrari’s willingness to innovate in a historic period shaped by new regulations, where bold decisions can be the difference between chasing and actually winning. A series of unique aerodynamic solutions impressed rival teams, transforming Ferrari’s work into a testing ground not only for the SF-26 but also for the philosophy guiding their 2026 project. According to Fred Vasseur, the 2026 regulations present a major challenge: a drastic reduction in aerodynamic downforce compared to previous years, forcing teams to rethink the very concept of a Formula 1 car from the ground up.
Ferrari’s transformation: balancing boldness with new responsibilities
The French team principal explained that the car fundamentally “lives” through downforce, making the recovery of every possible bit of aerodynamic grip crucial, particularly at the rear. “One characteristic of this year is that, due to the regulations, we have significantly less aerodynamic downforce than before. But the car only works with downforce, so our focus is on adding as much as possible, especially at the rear. It’s a challenge not just for us but for all our competitors,” Fred Vasseur said.
He also stressed that starting from a blank sheet inevitably carries the risk of taking the wrong direction. Nevertheless, innovation cannot exist without courage. Staying tied to conservative solutions out of fear of failure is not an option for a team aiming to return to the top. Fred Vasseur publicly praised the technical group led by Loïc Serra, highlighting their cohesion and determination, especially in handling unexpected technical issues during testing.
“I’m extremely happy with the work they’ve done. Starting from a blank sheet always brings the fear of making wrong choices, but being innovative and daring is the only way to excel. Many people prefer to play it safe out of fear, but that’s not our case. Taking risks is part of the DNA of our sport and it must also be part of the technical DNA. If you want to win, you must be willing to take risks on the technical side. We’ll see in Melbourne where we stand compared to others, but the important thing is that we had the courage to propose different solutions,” Fred Vasseur concluded.
As the team transitions from the testing phase to the first competitive weekend of the year, Fred Vasseur’s message becomes a clear mission statement for the Scuderia. By prioritizing bold engineering over the safety of convention, Ferrari is signaling that it is no longer content with playing catch-up. While the ultimate verdict will be delivered by the stopwatch at Albert Park, the spirit of innovation currently flowing through Maranello suggests a team that has finally rediscovered its technical confidence.
