Ferrari can look back on their 2026 Bahrain pre-season tests with satisfaction. While Charles Leclerc posted the fastest time during the session, the team’s primary focus was not speed alone. Reliability, smooth completion of the planned program, and minimal technical issues were the true highlights of the week. Several technical innovations, including a flap behind the exhaust and the so-called “Macarena” flipping wing, drew attention and showcased Maranello’s creativity and willingness to push boundaries. Rival teams have also acknowledged Ferrari’s potential, placing the Scuderia among the favorites alongside Mercedes.
Early signs of promise for the SF-26
While official answers will come during the first race weekend in Melbourne on March 1, Ferrari appears to have improved compared to recent periods. The test results suggest a solid foundation, with the car running reliably and completing nearly all of the planned mileage and evaluation tasks. These factors give the team confidence as they enter the final preparation phase before the season opener.
Vasseur calls for calm and perspective
Frederic Vasseur, Ferrari’s team principal, has often stressed the importance of keeping emotions in check within the team. Excitement can turn to disappointment quickly, and after Leclerc’s fastest lap, caution is warranted. In an end-of-test interview with Sky Italia, Fred Vasseur explained: “So far, everything has gone well. We need to remember that the goal of this week was to accumulate mileage, gather data, and start preparing the season on solid foundations. In that sense, we have achieved our objectives and the car has shown reasonable reliability. Performance is relative because, in the end, we do not know other teams’ fuel levels, engine mappings, or which tires they used.”
Maintaining the low profile Ferrari has kept throughout the winter, the French manager continued: “We have the fastest time here, but it has nothing to do with what will happen in Melbourne in two weeks, so we shouldn’t draw any conclusions yet.”
A message for the fans
Pressed by journalists, Fred Vasseur offered a brief message in Italian for Ferrari supporters: “Grazie mille per il vostro supporto e per la passione. Grazie mille.” His words underline the team’s appreciation for fan enthusiasm, while also reinforcing the measured approach that Ferrari plans to take heading into the new season.
Ferrari’s Bahrain testing demonstrated that the SF-26 is reliable and technically innovative, but Fred Vasseur reminds all that morning times and lap records are only part of the picture. The true test will come in Melbourne, where strategy, race conditions, and competition will reveal the real potential of the team.
