Mario Isola, Director of Pirelli Motorsport, has announced the implementation of an “Alternative Tyre Allocation” for the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix, which is set to take place this weekend at the Hungaroring Circuit in Budapest.
In an ongoing effort to enhance sustainability, the Italian tyre manufacturer will provide only 11 sets of tyres for the three-day event at the Hungaroring. Teams will be required to adhere to specific compound regulations during the qualifying hour on Saturday.
According to the new guidelines, drivers will commence Q1 using Hard tyres, then switch to Mediums in the second session. Finally, the top 10 contenders will vie for pole position utilizing the softest compound available.
This initiative serves as a trial for the ATA system, which, if successful, may be adopted for use in the following season and beyond.
Strategy factor
“A new tyre allocation for qualifying [known as ATA, or ‘Alternative Tyre Allocation’] will be tried out for the first time, with the obligation to use just the Hard in Q1, Medium in Q2 and Soft in Q3 if conditions stay dry,” the Italian explained in view of the Hungarian Grand Prix – “Both these changes, at least on paper, should lead to a wider range of options, particularly in terms of strategy. The ATA also saves two sets of dry tyres compared to the traditional format [using 11 sets instead of 13)] and it will be run again at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza. After that, the FIA, F1 and the teams will decide whether or not to adopt it for next season.” – Pirelli Motorsport Director Mario Isola concluded.
