Lucas Ordóñez, former Spanish driver in endurance and GT racing, has accused Ferrari of not giving Carlos Sainz the recognition and respect he deserves for his performances in the 2021 Formula 1 campaign, highlighting the results achieved by the Spanish driver. Additionally, Lucas Ordóñez pointed out that Carlos was able to outperform Charles Leclerc in his first year with the Maranello team, while the latter was praised by the Italian press and beyond.
Lucas Ordóñez demands greater respect from Ferrari towards Carlos Sainz
“Until Carlos Sainz arrived, Charles Leclerc had won everything,” said the Spaniard to his compatriots at Marca, the national daily sport newspaper owned by Unidad Editorial – “Since he started with karting, he won the GP3 and Formula 2 championships.”
“He was the handsome guy, a prodigy. It is quickly forgotten that this year, just like in 2021, Carlos Sainz is ahead of Charles Leclerc in the championship. The pressure from Maranello is very strong. Carlos deserves recognition and more respect from the team.” – said the Spanish racecar driver, who entered professional racing by winning a spot in a PlayStation 3 Gran Turismo competition.
Indeed, the Spanish driver finished ahead of his Maranello teammate in the 2021 Formula 1 championship. This year as well, despite the issues faced by the Monegasque, Carlos Sainz currently holds fifth place in the drivers’ standings, while Charles Leclerc temporarily occupies seventh place ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix.

However, despite being ahead by 9 points, the former McLaren driver has not yet achieved podium finishes this season, unlike the two podiums obtained by car number 16 in Baku and Austria.
Continuing with the interview, the former WEC driver also praised the other Spanish driver on the grid, Fernando Alonso: “He is a leader, an extraordinary driver who also motivates the whole team. After his break from Formula 1, winning at Le Mans and Daytona, he has returned to be among the best. We have two Spanish drivers in Q3 at every grand prix, and we are not satisfied. We are very demanding, but it happens in all sports. If Rafael Nadal doesn’t win two tournaments, the world collapses.” – he continued.
“We must be aware of what Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz achieve in every race. Fernando must have gone through a very difficult period during the years when he didn’t have a competitive car. This year, he has shown how great his talent is as a driver,” concludes Lucas Ordóñez.
