Formula 1 moves closer to V8 comeback as Ferrari, Mercedes and Audi back new engine direction. Formula 1 manufacturers are increasingly aligned on bringing back hybrid V8 engines,.

2026 F1 race start

The possibility of Formula 1 bringing back V8 engines is no longer just a nostalgic idea from fans or former drivers. Behind the scenes, discussions between manufacturers and the FIA are becoming increasingly concrete, with the sport now moving toward a future that could combine the emotional appeal of traditional combustion engines with a lighter hybrid element.

According to growing reports from inside the paddock, every current power unit manufacturer has now shown openness toward the return of V8 engines in Formula 1. While the exact timing still needs to be finalized, the direction appears increasingly clear: the current generation of heavily electrified 2026 power units may only represent a transitional phase before the sport enters a new era focused on simpler, louder and more cost-effective engines.

The discussions are centered around maintaining hybrid technology, but reducing its influence compared to the regulations that will debut in 2026. Formula 1’s next long-term engine philosophy would therefore keep an electrical component, while placing the combustion engine back at the center of performance and sound.

Manufacturers align behind future hybrid V8 Formula 1 engines

During the Miami Grand Prix weekend, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem publicly pushed the idea of bringing V8 engines back to Formula 1 in the future. Since then, support for the concept has continued to grow among teams and manufacturers.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff reportedly acknowledged that a future Formula 1 engine formula based on roughly 800 horsepower from the combustion engine and around 400 horsepower from hybrid systems could represent the ideal compromise for the sport. Such a configuration would still deliver around 1200 total horsepower while avoiding an excessive dependence on electrical deployment.

The Austrian also reportedly accepted that moving entirely away from hybrid technology would not make sense in the modern automotive world. Instead, Formula 1 appears determined to preserve a hybrid identity while reducing the extreme electrical emphasis planned for the 2026 regulations.

That balance is particularly important for manufacturers Audi and Honda. Audi originally entered Formula 1 because of the hybrid-focused regulations, but the German manufacturer is also believed to appreciate the commercial and marketing value of V8 engines, especially if turbocharging remains part of the package.

Honda, which officially stepped away from Formula 1 before returning through Aston Martin, also appears supportive of a revised engine philosophy that keeps hybrid systems relevant without allowing them to dominate performance entirely.

Ferrari sees advantages in cost reduction and engine simplicity

Ferrari is also understood to be among the supporters of a future V8 return. From the perspective of the Scuderia, a simpler engine architecture could help reduce development costs while also restoring some of the emotional identity that many fans associate with Formula 1’s most iconic eras.

The Maranello team has continued to invest heavily into hybrid technology, but internally there is awareness that the complexity and financial demands of the current power unit regulations have reached extremely high levels. A future hybrid V8 formula would potentially offer a more sustainable balance between technological relevance, entertainment and financial efficiency.

This discussion becomes particularly important as Ferrari continues working to close the performance gap to Mercedes under the current regulations. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are both expected to play major roles in Ferrari’s long-term project, and any future engine reset could significantly influence the competitive order in Formula 1 over the next decade.

For Lewis Hamilton, who experienced Formula 1 during the final years of the V8 era, the possible return of louder and more aggressive combustion engines would also reconnect the championship with a sound and driving philosophy many drivers still miss today.

Charles Leclerc, meanwhile, would potentially benefit from a Formula 1 environment where driver input and throttle management regain even greater importance compared to the current energy-management-heavy systems.

Ford, General Motors and Red Bull also interested in new engine direction

The growing support for V8 engines could also strengthen Formula 1’s appeal in the United States. Ford has already partnered with Red Bull Powertrains for the next engine cycle, while General Motors continues developing its long-term Cadillac Formula 1 project.

A future engine formula based around hybrid V8 power units could make the championship even more attractive for American manufacturers thanks to lower costs, stronger branding opportunities and the emotional connection associated with traditional combustion engines.

At the same time, Red Bull Powertrains reportedly supports the idea because of the potential reduction in complexity and development expenses. The current generation of hybrid systems requires enormous investments in battery technology and energy deployment strategies, areas that have become increasingly difficult for smaller or newer manufacturers to manage competitively.

Cadillac remains something of an exception, as the American project is still focused on introducing a V6 hybrid power unit around 2029. However, even that plan could evolve depending on how Formula 1 finalizes its long-term engine strategy.

Formula 1 could complete V8 return by 2031

While no final agreement has yet been officially confirmed, the overall direction inside Formula 1 now appears increasingly obvious. The sport wants to preserve hybrid technology, maintain manufacturer interest and continue promoting sustainability, but without sacrificing the emotional identity that made Formula 1 famous worldwide.

For years, fans have criticized modern power units for being too quiet, too complex and too dependent on energy management. The growing momentum behind hybrid V8 engines suggests Formula 1 is finally listening.

The only remaining uncertainty concerns timing. Whether the switch arrives before 2031 or exactly at the start of the next decade, Formula 1 seems destined to welcome back V8 engines in some form — combining modern hybrid technology with the sound, emotion and spectacle many believe the sport has been missing.
