Focus on 2024
Today, with the two free practice sessions, Formula 1 will kick off the final weekend of 2023 in the familiar setting of Abu Dhabi at the 5.281-kilometre Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island. Paradoxically, the track won’t be the place where the most crucial decisions are made because an important meeting of the F1 Commission is scheduled for later today.
Following the events which took place in Las Vegas last weekend, the agenda cannot avoid examining any regulatory exemptions to prevent a recurrence of dynamics such as Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz moving back ten positions on the starting grid and the Maranello team recording damages amounting to two million euros without specific responsibilities attributed to the Spanish driver and the Italian side regarding the manhole cover that affected the SF-23 #55 car in the first free practice session for the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
Also on the discussion table will be the potential new Sprint format in the 2024 Formula One season. According to today’s edition of the Italian newspaper Il Corriere dello Sport, the type of sessions and their regulations will remain unchanged, but the order in which these sessions take place could vary. The idea is to hold the Sprint Shootout Qualifying on Friday after the only free practice session, leaving the actual Qualifying in the traditional Saturday afternoon slot, with the Sprint race starting on Saturday morning. This would create a more engaging build-up for fans, but there’s a problem: teams fear they may not be able to participate in the Grand Prix Qualifying if incidents occur in the Saturday morning Sprint.
