2026 may still seem far away, but Formula 1 and the teams are already looking ahead to when the technical regulations will undergo a profound change. We know that in 2026, Red Bull will produce its Power Unit in-house, Audi will join the paddock, and Honda will supply engines to Aston Martin. Speaking of the new regulations, the FIA has long announced all the requirements that each team must adhere to but is still working on the details. Below, we outline all the changes decided by the International Federation.
The FIA pushes towards a new Formula 1
The new power units in 2026 will be smaller, lighter, and more efficient. The single-seaters themselves will also be downsized. Their width will no longer be 200 but 190 centimeters. The wheelbase will be reduced from 360 to 340 centimeters, while the tires will be 16 inches instead of 18. Overall, Pirelli will produce tires 10% smaller than the current ones.
The last two planned modifications will affect the weight, which will be reduced by about 25-30 kilograms, and the aerodynamics of the single-seaters. However, this last topic has not yet been entirely defined. According to the latest rumors, a point under discussion concerns the Beam Wing and the diffuser; these last two components are intended to be flattened. Front and rear wings are also expected to be modified, along with the possible repositioning of Venturi channels. At the rear, the inwash principle will be imposed, making the rear less turbulent and thus making overtaking a bit easier. We must therefore wait for a few more seasons to understand if what the FIA engineers have designed will prove functional for the Formula 1 to come.
