Fred Vasseur issues firm warning to Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc after Ferrari Mexico GP clash

Fred Vasseur, Ferrari team boss, 2026 F1

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has delivered a firm warning to Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc following their controversial clash at the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix, insisting that both drivers must put the interests of Ferrari ahead of their personal ambitions. After holding talks with the two drivers on Thursday evening in Brazil, the French manager confirmed that Ferrari’s internal racing guidelines would remain unchanged, but demanded greater mutual respect to prevent another costly confrontation.

The tension surrounding the opening-lap incident in Mexico, which cost Ferrari an almost certain one-two finish, has followed the team to Interlagos. Lewis Hamilton’s comments during the pre-weekend press conference reignited the controversy, making it clear that the seven-time world champion remains deeply frustrated by a battle with Charles Leclerc that he believes deprived him of victory. For Fred Vasseur, however, the priority is not deciding which driver was right, but ensuring that Ferrari never again loses such an opportunity because of an internal rivalry.

Fred Vasseur holds Ferrari meeting with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc in Brazil

The consequences of the Mexico City Grand Prix have continued to dominate discussions within Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton still considers the events of the opening lap a major disappointment, and his frustration over a potential victory lost during a battle with his own teammate has added to tensions that had already been building through several incidents in recent months.

Every Formula 1 driver naturally wants to finish ahead of their teammate, but there is a limit to how far that competition can go, particularly when the team’s overall result is placed at risk.

Following the confrontation in Mexico, Lewis Hamilton called for serious discussions with Charles Leclerc and Fred Vasseur about the way his teammate races against him. The British driver believes Charles Leclerc adopts a more aggressive approach when battling him than when competing against other rivals.

Fred Vasseur had already expressed his disappointment immediately after the Mexican Grand Prix, describing the drivers’ conduct as a lack of respect towards the approximately 2,000 employees working at Maranello who devote themselves to helping Ferrari win.

Once the team arrived in Brazil, the French manager was determined not to allow the disagreement to continue unresolved. Having returned to Europe between the two races, Fred Vasseur brought both drivers together for a meeting on Thursday evening.

Charles Leclerc had arrived in São Paulo after spending several days at home following the birth of his daughter. The meeting therefore provided the first opportunity for all three to address the controversy directly, reduce tensions and reinforce Ferrari’s collective priorities.

The central message was straightforward: Ferrari must come before individual interests, particularly after those interests contributed to the loss of a potentially decisive result in Mexico.

“It was useful to discuss things and clarify my position and theirs,” Fred Vasseur explained during the team principals’ press conference in Brazil.

Ferrari racing guidelines will not change despite Hamilton-Leclerc controversy

The confrontation has inevitably raised questions about how Ferrari manages competition between its drivers. In particular, attention has turned to the team’s internal racing guidelines, whether Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc respected them in Mexico, and whether stricter instructions might now be necessary.

Preventing teammates from attacking each other or imposing a fixed hierarchy should not necessarily be the solution. However, the freedom to race must be accompanied by professionalism and respect for the team, principles that appeared to take second place during the Mexican Grand Prix.

Any attempt to overtake a teammate must be carried out with particular attention to safety, especially when victory is at stake. Charles Leclerc attempted his move around the outside, but it was hardly realistic to expect Lewis Hamilton to offer no resistance or avoid braking later himself.

Fred Vasseur nevertheless made clear that Ferrari would not rewrite its existing rules of engagement. Instead, the team principal believes both drivers must better understand their responsibilities when competing directly against each other.

“The guidelines are still the same. I think they’ve built up a bit of frustration because they start every weekend alongside each other, and there’s a sort of accumulation of incidents. But ultimately, the guidelines are always the same,” Fred Vasseur explained.

Part of that frustration, according to the Ferrari boss, comes from the fact that Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc frequently find themselves competing for the same position. Over time, those repeated battles can increase tensions, particularly when neither driver wants to concede ground.

Looking back across the season, Mexico was not the first occasion on which Ferrari’s internal rivalry had affected the team’s wider interests. The continuing tensions between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have therefore become an increasingly important issue for the Scuderia to manage.

Fred Vasseur demands respect for Ferrari, its employees and its supporters

Although Fred Vasseur intends to preserve the drivers’ freedom to compete, he was emphatic about the limits of that freedom. The Ferrari team principal stressed that mutual respect must extend beyond the two drivers to everyone involved in the team’s operations.

“They have to respect each other. They are two drivers competing against each other and they have a great fighting spirit, but they must have respect for one another. Above all, and first and foremost, they must respect the brand, the team, the people working at the factory and those working at the track. We are putting a lot of effort into this, and the message was clear and will remain clear.”

The comments reinforce Fred Vasseur’s criticism of Ferrari’s lost opportunity in Mexico, when the team had both cars running first and second but ultimately failed to secure victory.

For the French manager, the responsibility carried by Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc goes beyond their individual ambitions. Their decisions on track affect the work of the entire organisation, from the engineers and mechanics at the circuit to the employees developing the car at Maranello.

The team principal’s message was therefore not simply an attempt to settle a personal disagreement. It was a reminder that Ferrari’s collective interests must remain the priority, even when two highly competitive drivers are fighting for the same result.

Vasseur responds to Lewis Hamilton’s criticism of Charles Leclerc’s aggressive racing

Lewis Hamilton had added to the controversy ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix by reiterating his belief that Charles Leclerc races against him with greater competitive aggression than he shows towards other opponents.

Fred Vasseur attempted to put those remarks into perspective by recalling Charles Leclerc’s aggressive overtake on Max Verstappen at Austin. The Ferrari boss pointed out that the same determined approach had been widely praised when directed against a rival from another team.

“He said that Charles was probably fighting him a little harder than he fights others, but if you look at what Charles did in Austin in the first sector, everyone said it was magic. The line between the two is thin. But he didn’t crash into the other car,” Fred Vasseur added.

His comparison highlighted the fine distinction between an impressive racing move and one that creates unnecessary risk. An aggressive overtake can be celebrated when successfully executed, but the consequences become considerably more serious when the battle compromises both cars from the same team.

Fred Vasseur’s response also made clear that he was not prepared to accept the suggestion that Charles Leclerc’s racing approach was necessarily different when facing Lewis Hamilton. Instead, he pointed to the Monegasque driver’s willingness to make similarly committed moves against other competitors.

Ferrari admits collective failure after losing Mexico GP victory

Beyond the disagreement between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, Fred Vasseur identified the outcome of the Mexican Grand Prix as the clearest evidence that Ferrari needed to respond.

Having occupied the leading two positions, the team had an exceptional opportunity to secure victory. Instead, the opening-lap confrontation contributed to a result that fell well short of what appeared possible.

The disappointment was particularly significant because Ferrari had demonstrated the competitiveness required to fight at the front. Yet the team’s inability to convert that advantage into a victory exposed the consequences of allowing individual battles to interfere with the collective objective.

“For sure, in this situation, we failed collectively because we were first and second and, in the end, we didn’t win the race. That means it’s clear that we failed and we have to react,” Fred Vasseur admitted.

The Ferrari team principal then returned to the message delivered during Thursday evening’s meeting, emphasising that the interests of the Scuderia must take precedence over those of either driver.

“But the conclusion of last night’s meeting was clear. It was a firm reminder that Ferrari comes first. It comes first for the brand, for the employees, for the fans, and we have to keep that firmly in mind.”

Fred Vasseur’s position leaves little ambiguity about Ferrari’s approach following the Mexico controversy. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc will remain free to compete against each other, and the team’s internal racing guidelines will not be changed. However, that freedom must be exercised with greater respect and an understanding of the consequences for Ferrari.

With the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend now underway, the Scuderia’s immediate challenge is to ensure that the tensions carried over from Mexico do not become another obstacle to achieving the results its recent competitiveness has made possible.
