F1 Miami GP hits the cinema: how the first IMAX Grand Prix experience went
The first Formula 1 event ever broadcast in IMAX cinemas has taken place in the United States, marking a new step in how fans can experience live motorsport. Apple is set to stream five F1 races live in IMAX format across more than 50 cinemas in the US, bringing Formula 1 onto the big screen for the very first time in a live setting.
When the project was announced, fan reactions were mixed, with doubts about whether circuits like Miami and Monaco—often criticised for their racing quality—could truly benefit from such a format. However, after the first test with the Miami Grand Prix, the verdict from audiences appears much clearer: Formula 1 belongs in IMAX.
The event in Los Angeles
Despite a poorly communicated schedule change that moved the start to the morning, the Universal Cinema AMC at CityWalk in Los Angeles was filled with fans. Many attendees wore team merchandise or clothing linked to the upcoming “F1” film, creating a strong motorsport atmosphere inside the cinema.
The crowd reflected the evolving Formula 1 audience in the United States—a mix of long-time followers and new fans, many of them young. For a significant number of spectators, it was the first time watching a race outside of home or traditional viewing environments.
One fan interviewed by Racer before entering the screening said: “I hope the sound is really loud and that I can feel the cars moving.” He added that the experience would elevate how fans of all levels engage with motorsport, also noting the sold-out screening as a clear sign of strong demand.
Inside the cinema, the atmosphere resembled a grandstand on race day. Fans supporting the same teams greeted each other, while key moments in the race triggered applause, cheers, and collective reactions of frustration or excitement. Even checkered flags were handed out for spectators to wave at the end of the race.
The value of a shared experience
Many fans highlighted the unique feeling of watching the race together with others. Teenager Jasmin described the event: “It was a new experience, really unique, and it definitely satisfied a lot of fans who couldn’t go and see it in Miami. I saw a lot of other McLaren fans and I went up to them saying ‘Let’s go McLaren!’. I also saw Ferrari fans joining in.”
Another McLaren supporter, Aileen Morales, active in the online F1 community, shared her impressions: “I thought it was amazing. Fans of different teams all cheering together made it more exciting than watching alone at home. It was an incredible feeling.”
She also explained how Apple’s IMAX project can bridge the gap between digital and real-life fan interactions: “This is such a safe and beautiful opportunity to meet online friends, and maybe even meet new people if they’re wearing your team’s merchandise. Like, ‘Hey, let’s cheer for them together!’”
Technical quality and visual impact
Despite the positive atmosphere, the technical execution was not flawless. Some viewers noted video compression issues and engine sounds that felt quieter than expected—elements that fans hope will improve in future broadcasts. Nevertheless, the overall experience was still considered unique compared to any traditional off-track viewing option.
Even experienced fans were captivated by the dramatic opening laps and late-race action displayed on the massive IMAX screen.
Peter, who often watches races in sports bars with his friend Dalton, said: “I was moving my head a lot more than usual because the screen is so big and there’s so much to look at. It was a great experience. I definitely want to do it again.”

Cierra Seawright, who became an F1 fan after watching Drive to Survive on Netflix two years ago, particularly enjoyed the onboard footage: “The onboards on such a huge IMAX screen made them really fun to watch.” Her friend Mackenzie added: “The POV shots were especially intense.”
After the race, attendees also had the chance to take photos with a McLaren show car and admire the Artura and 750S supercars in the dedicated fan area, adding a final touch of Grand Prix atmosphere.
The “F1 on Apple TV Live in IMAX” experience will continue with the Monaco Grand Prix on June 7.
