The recent history of Formula 1 has known an authentic evolution not only from a technical regulations point of view, but also in terms of the organizing the calendars. Beyond the increase in scheduled appointments, the sport has reached new countries that had never hosted a Formula 1 Grand Prix, especially in the Middle Eastern region of the globe.
To this, other races have also been added in the United States, where three GPs will be held in the space of a single championship (Austin, Miami and the returning Las Vegas Grand Prix). In all of this, it was Europe that paid the most.
The Old Continent, which is historically the home of Formula One, has in fact lost some classic events such as Germany and France, and is struggling to confirm other legendary venues such as Monaco, Spa-Francorchamps, Silverstone and Monza. The general fear is that the category is increasingly moving away from Europe towards other areas of the world, even more so after the arrival of Liberty Media. In this respect, however, reassurances have come from Mohammed ben Sulayem, the current President of the FIA.
While stating that he wants to create a certain balance between the European races and those scheduled in the rest of the world, the president of the International Federation guaranteed that he especially wants to protect the European Continent, with the latter however having to make an effort to keep alive the fans’ interest in motorsport: “Even if there are other parts of the world that are becoming more attractive, we mustn’t abandon Europe – he explained – everything started there for Formula 1. I think you can go anywhere, but you can’t take everything out of Europe at the same time. I will try to protect her as much as possible. But where is the red line drawn? Ultimately, the promoter is building a business and we need to consider what we need to do to keep motorsport in this world, which is increasingly hostile to cars. But since water only flows in one direction, it is necessary for countries to support it, and some do it more than others, unfortunately most often outside Europe” – the FIA president pointed out.

In the 2023 F1 calendar, France lost its place to make room for the Chinese Grand Prix (which was later cancelled due to the COVID-19 restrictions) and the novelty Las Vegas. Spa was ‘saved’ because the negotiations for the return to South Africa in Kyalami did not materialise, but the future of the Belgian Grand Prix is not guaranteed.
