FIA presidency: Carlos Sainz Sr confirms he’s seriously considering running. Carlos Sainz confirms he is seriously considering a run for FIA president.

Carlos Sainz challenges Mohammed Ben Sulayem
Having just turned 63, Carlos Sainz is seeking new challenges. Earlier today, we reported that the rally legend is considering running for the presidency of the FIA — a scenario that has now been confirmed by the Spaniard himself, who could indeed challenge current FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem in the upcoming December elections.

Carlos Sainz’s words
“I’m seriously considering running for the presidency of the FIA,” he confirmed to El Confidencial. “Motorsport has been, and continues to be, my life. It has given me everything, and I think this would be a great way to give back some of what I’ve received. It could be the right time in my professional career to take this step, and many people are encouraging me.”

“From now on, it will be important to assess the support I can gather, but I’m confident I can build a great team to accompany me in this candidacy,” he continued. “I’ve been in this world for over 40 years and have firsthand knowledge of several disciplines, such as the World Rally Championship, rally raids, and the Dakar, in addition to karting and Formula 1. Over the course of my career, I’ve met many people who have supported me at all levels. I know this is a position of great responsibility, but I’m ready to take it on: I’m convinced I can bring many new ideas thanks to my experience and contribute to improving both the world of racing and that of mobility.” – he pointed out.

If Carlos Sainz were to run and defeat Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the Emirati would become the first FIA president to lose an election since Jean-Marie Balestre, who was defeated in 1993 by Max Mosley. The idea of running has taken shape in recent weeks and would become more concrete if Carlos Sainz were to receive solid support from various national sporting authorities. Nearly 250 bodies representing 140 countries will vote in the upcoming election, scheduled during the General Assembly in Uzbekistan on December 12.
