In the F1 Commission meeting held before this weekend’s 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit, an agreement was reached by the Formula 1 teams to increase the component allowance for specific elements of their Power Units for the current Formula 1 championship.
Starting from 2023, drivers will be allowed to use four Internal Combustion Engines (ICE), Turbo Chargers, MGU-H, and MGU-K elements, instead of three. This decision will be welcomed by some drivers who have already used up their second ICE before the upcoming race in Baku. These drivers include Valtteri Bottas, Zhou Guanyu, Kevin Magnussen, Nico Hulkenberg, and Nyck de Vries.
In addition, it is anticipated that George Russell will also need to use a second ICE, MGU-H, MGU-K, and Turbo Charger after his engine was severely damaged during the Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park circuit.
However, the allowance for Control Electronics and Energy Stores will remain at two for the entire Formula 1 campaign. This rule caught Scuderia Ferrari off-guard as the Maranello team received a grid penalty for Charles Leclerc in the Saudi Arabian GP after installing two new components.
