Lewis Hamilton has released an eight-minute documentary documenting the complete restoration of his personal Ferrari F40, one of the cars closest to the seven-time Formula 1 world champion’s heart. After revealing the extraordinary story behind the car during the Italian Grand Prix weekend at Monza, the Ferrari driver has now shown fans the entire journey that brought the legendary F40 back to life.
The story is particularly remarkable because Lewis Hamilton has always admitted that the Ferrari F40 is his favourite car. His own example is even more unusual: despite its age, the car has covered just 69 kilometres, making it virtually brand new in mileage terms.
Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari F40 had covered only 69 km
Lewis Hamilton acquired the Ferrari F40 from its previous owner, who had kept the car stored in a garage for more than 30 years. It was certainly an unusual fate for one of Ferrari’s most iconic road cars, but the extraordinary period of inactivity also explains why the F40 accumulated such incredibly low mileage.
Once the purchase had been completed, “The Hammer” decided not simply to put the car back on the road. Instead, Lewis Hamilton entrusted his prized Ferrari to the expert hands of Ferrari Classiche for a complete restoration carried out in accordance with the appropriate procedures and standards.

The restoration required several months of work at Ferrari’s facilities in Maranello. By the end of the process, Lewis Hamilton’s F40 had effectively been returned to as-new condition, preserving the character and originality of one of the most celebrated Ferrari models ever produced.
With the work completed, Lewis Hamilton chose a particularly fitting occasion to show the car publicly. In September 2026, he arrived at Monza for the Italian Grand Prix behind the wheel of his restored Ferrari F40.
Lewis Hamilton also chose a special outfit for the occasion, appearing exceptionally elegant despite the high temperatures. The combination of the Ferrari driver, the historic car and the Monza setting naturally attracted considerable attention from the photographers and journalists gathered at the circuit.
From a Monza photoshoot to an eight-minute documentary
Lewis Hamilton later headed to the legendary Curva Parabolica at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza for a dedicated photoshoot designed to capture the occasion. The images were probably only the first stage of a carefully planned marketing and communications project surrounding the restoration of a legendary Ferrari for an equally celebrated figure in the company’s Formula 1 story.
That project has now continued with the release of an eight-minute documentary across Lewis Hamilton’s social media channels. The video takes fans through the entire restoration process and offers a closer look at the work required to return the Ferrari F40 to its remarkable condition.
One of the most striking moments comes when Lewis Hamilton finally gets behind the wheel for the first time. His emotion is clearly visible as he drives the car he considers “the most beautiful of all”, bringing together his personal passion for Ferrari’s road-car history with his new chapter as a Ferrari Formula 1 driver.
