Charles Leclerc believes Ferrari’s latest upgrades have delivered exactly what the team hoped for, but he also warned that the outstanding performance shown at the Barcelona circuit was helped by conditions that perfectly suited the strengths of the updated SF-26.
Following qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was full of praise for Ferrari’s progress, describing the upgraded SF-26 as a dramatically improved car.
“Ferrari is monstrous, the upgrade has completely changed the car,” Wolff said after Saturday’s qualifying session at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, highlighting the significant step forward made by the Scuderia with the package introduced at Montmeló.
Ferrari went on to confirm that progress by securing victory in the Spanish Grand Prix with Lewis Hamilton, a result that validated the extensive development work carried out at Maranello. Team principal Frederic Vasseur had expressed strong confidence in the new components even before they reached the track.
Despite the encouraging result, Charles Leclerc believes Ferrari’s impressive performance was enhanced by a circuit layout and weather conditions that played directly into one of the SF-26’s biggest strengths.
“The car is very effective at limiting and managing tyre degradation,” Charles Leclerc explained. “On this track, that characteristic stood out even more. It is definitely a very positive factor looking ahead to the future, but this circuit ‘magnified’ that strength.
“The upgrades are certainly working, and now it’s up to me to be up there fighting at the front together with Hamilton.”
The next opportunity to measure Ferrari’s true level could come at the Austrian Grand Prix. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli has already stated that he expects Mercedes to be highly competitive at the Red Bull Ring, setting the stage for what could be a fascinating rematch between Ferrari and Mercedes.
There will also be considerable interest surrounding Ferrari’s development plans, particularly amid reports that the Italian team could introduce the first power unit-related updates made possible by the concessions available under the ADUO regulations. If those upgrades arrive as expected, Austria could provide an even clearer indication of Ferrari’s championship credentials for the remainder of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
