The Miami GP highlighted the limits of the Red team. It wasn’t an easy weekend for Charles Leclerc, nor for Lewis Hamilton: on top of the issues faced by driver number 44, there was also a rather heated exchange with the Ferrari pit wall. A former driver commented on the Briton’s problems, analyzing the situation and offering an explanation.
As mentioned, the race in Miami revealed a general confusion within Ferrari. The team orders disrupted the race, causing considerable tension between driver and pit wall. This led to a minor rift between Lewis and Riccardo Adami, his race engineer, with whom he has yet to develop a strong connection.
Ferrari like Mercedes: Lewis Hamilton’s problem
However, this is just an additional complication in an already delicate situation. As Jolyon Palmer explains, Lewis Hamilton is underperforming due to the car’s setup, which doesn’t suit his driving style. This is not a new issue for driver number 44, who also struggled to shine during his last years with the German team. “Hamilton is a driver who has suffered from excessive rear instability over the past two seasons.” – pointed out the British former racing driver, broadcaster and journalist, who competed in Formula One from 2016 to 2017.
“It was precisely this instability that affected him at Mercedes last year, and the trend seems to have followed him to Ferrari. In general, he likes to enter corners at high speed, but to do that effectively he needs a stable rear.”
Jolyon Palmer concluded by absolving the two Ferrari drivers of blame for the car’s results. “If the team could find a better operating window for the car, I have no doubt that Ferrari still has the drivers and procedures needed to win races.”
