On February 1st, news broke that shocked F1 fans. Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari officially announced their partnership, at the expense of Carlos Sainz. During the winter, there was no shortage of speculation about Ferrari fighting for the championship. However, the truth is that these first races from the Briton don’t offer much hope.
Someone who definitely hasn’t lost faith is Gunther Steiner, who still sees potential in Lewis Hamilton. According to the South Tyrolean, it’s just a matter of time before the Brit gets used to this new working method and a car very different from the Mercedes.
“He still has time to recover, but I don’t think he’ll regret it. Of course, he’s finding the situation difficult; he’s not happy with where he is now and the position he’s in is tough for him,” emphasized the former Haas team principal. Gunther Steiner then added an important observation about Lewis Hamilton’s choice.
Driving for Ferrari is an ambition held by all drivers, or at least most. During the peak years of Lewis’s dominance with Mercedes, there were constant rumors linking him to a move to Maranello. Now, at forty years old, the British driver has started his first season in red, which could very well represent the final chapter of his career.
That’s exactly what Gunther talked about: “He knew what he was doing. For him, ending his racing career at Ferrari was more of a life mission. It’s the dream of many. Of course, maybe he hoped to improve, but I think he has time.”
Could Lewis Hamilton now regret not staying with the German team, given their improvements? Gunther Steiner concluded by explaining: “Yes, maybe things at Mercedes are going a bit better now, but Mercedes still hasn’t even won a Sprint race. Let’s just say he’d still be driving a Mercedes, not a McLaren.”
