John Elkann’s comments about Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc continue to cause tension inside Ferrari and across the Formula 1 paddock. A member of the Maranello team has now stepped in, trying to explain the president’s remarks and calm the growing debate.
Elkann’s criticism sparks controversy
The Ferrari president’s words after the disastrous weekend in Interlagos have shaken the paddock. “We need our drivers to talk less and drive more,” said John Elkann, commenting on another race that ended with zero points for Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
His remarks quickly made headlines around the world and drew widespread criticism for the tone and timing of the message. But Ferrari has now issued a clarification: a team spokesperson told ESPN that John Elkann’s comments were meant to be “constructive” and were intended to motivate everyone within the team, rather than to serve as a public scolding of the drivers.
Ferrari’s attempt to soften the message
ESPN described this interpretation as “rather generous,” given how the statement came across on camera. During his interview, John Elkann praised the work of Ferrari’s mechanics and engineers, saying those departments were performing very well, while suggesting that the drivers should focus more on their on-track performance.
However, many in the motorsport world were not convinced by the clarification. To them, John Elkann’s remarks appeared to be the latest sign of a disconnected and underperforming Ferrari. Critics argue that his words reflected deeper tensions within the team, which continues to struggle for competitiveness and unity.
Frustration grows inside Ferrari
The president emphasized Ferrari’s technical progress, including improved pit stops and a more competitive chassis. Yet, he admitted that the team still lacks the cohesion needed to challenge the top teams on a consistent basis.
Lewis Hamilton, still chasing his first podium finish with Ferrari, has described his season as “a nightmare.” Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc has shown visible frustration over recurring car issues and missed opportunities, adding to the sense of internal strain.
A clarification that raises more questions
Despite Ferrari’s efforts to explain John Elkann’s words, the controversy has not faded. The clarification only fuels one key question: if the president’s comments were truly motivational, why did so many interpret them as a public rebuke? Perhaps because, at Ferrari, every word carries immense weight—and when those words come from the team’s highest authority, they inevitably spark debate.
