“For now John Elkann, the president, and Benedetto Vigna, the rampant chief executive officer of the company, have forgotten to appoint a technical director. In fact, the plenipotentiary Mattia Binotto, who is an engineer, also held that role in the last years. Who will be responsible for the 2023 car, which is already designed? The returning Simone Resta? Enrico Cardile who is already in the factory?” – these are the comments of well-known Italian journalist Leo Turrini in his editorial for today’s edition of Italian newspaper ‘Il Resto del Carlino’, as he underlined what remains a problem still to be resolved within the organization chart of Scuderia Ferrari.
The now former team principal and managing director Mattia Binotto had assumed the dual role of technical director and team principal in 2019 and then fragmented the technical management into different areas entrusted to several people directly below him, namely Enrico Cardile (chassis manager), Enrico Gualtieri (power unit manager) and David Sanchez (aerodynamics manager).
In pole to take on a position currently not present within the Scuderia is Simone Resta, who first worked at Sauber and then at Haas due to incompatibility with Mattia Binotto.
It is said, however, that Simone Resta’s return to Maranello is not as clear as it seemed a few days ago: “Regarding the staff, with a 2023 single-seater about which we hear good things, designed by the previous management – any intervention on the staff would involve immediate risks and lack of balance. For this reason the technical management could remain with Enrico Cardile” – today’s edition of Il Corriere della Sera wrote.

A technical ‘continuity’ therefore to safeguard the immediate future and the results to be achieved in 2023 without therefore creating mitigating factors for yet another year of transition towards one or more world titles that would be foreseen in 2024.
Corriere dello Sport, summarizing who will be the assistants of the new commander Fred Vasseur, underlines potential parallels with the golden era of the beginning of the millennium: “Under Fred Vasseur, the current trio remains, which also reported to Mattia Binotto: the technical director Enrico Cardile, the engine chief Enrico Gualtieri and racing director Laurent Mekies. A structure not unlike the one that made up Ferrari in the golden years of Schumi: first Mattia Binotto and now Fred Vasseur in the role that then belonged to Jean Todt, Cardile for Ross Brawn, Gualtieri for Paolo Martinelli, Laurent Mekies for Stefano Domenicali.” – Corriere dello Sport wrote.
