The road is long, and probably more challenging than initially expected and hoped for. Ferrari leaves China with a double disqualification for Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, sparking numerous controversies that forced the team to publish a statement explaining the situation.
The FIA found irregularities on both SF-25 cars at the end of the second round of the 2025 Formula 1 season. Charles Leclerc’s car was underweight, while Lewis Hamilton’s was disqualified due to excessive floor wear.
Ferrari’s statement
Ferrari issued a statement commenting on the FIA’s decision and explaining the reasons behind what happened in Shanghai. The team stated that following post-race FIA inspections, both cars were found to be non-compliant with the regulations for different reasons. Car number 16 was one kilogram below the minimum weight, while car number 44 had excessive skid wear, exceeding the 0.5 mm limit. The team explained that Charles’ one-stop strategy led to excessive tire degradation, which in turn caused an overall loss of weight.
Regarding Lewis Hamilton , Ferrari admitted that they had underestimated the potential floor wear. The Maranello team emphasized that there was no intent to gain any advantage and stated that they would learn from the incident to ensure it does not happen again. They acknowledged that this was not how they wanted to end the Chinese Grand Prix, neither for themselves nor for the fans who support them.
