Despite Ferrari’s drastic drop in performance in recent races, Charles Leclerc believes that the 2024 Formula 1 drivers’ and constructors’ titles are still within reach. Hope is the last to die for Charles Leclerc, who had touched the sky with a finger with his triumph in the Monaco Grand Prix just two months ago, and who now finds himself living a real nightmare after yet another disaster that took place last weekend at Silverstone.
Charles Leclerc still believes in the championship dream
Despite the drastic drop in performance of the SF-24 since Canada, the Monegasque’s motivation does not seem to have been particularly affected, with the title goal, according to Charles Leclerc, still within reach for the prancing horse despite the difficulties.
“In the last few races, we are not exactly where we would like to be in terms of performance, and this is my main priority: to get back to having performances that allow us to fight for poles and victories,” said the number 16 in an interview with the BBC on the eve of the Budapest race weekend.
“I expect that we will be in the fight with McLaren and Red Bull as soon as we have maximized the potential of our updates on the car. I still believe that the most prestigious goals are possible, namely the championship,” the Monegasque driver added later. “Is it just driver optimism? I don’t know, but I think it’s important for me to maintain this optimism and this very high motivation.” – he pointed out.
“In the end, we are talking about two-tenths. If we put everything together, it is not so absurd. We need to focus on every single detail, and the season is still long, so I still believe.”
After the double podium finish in the Monaco Grand Prix, Ferrari had managed to close the gap with Red Bull in the constructors’ championship to just 24 points, taking advantage of Max Verstappen’s terrible weekend and Sergio Perez’s zero points finish.
However, the many points lost from Montreal onwards have allowed the Milton Keynes team to put a safe distance again, with the standings now seeing the Austrians leading by 71 points, with McLaren and especially Mercedes in great shape and continuing to gain ground on the prancing horse.
