Monza Circuit,
The Formula 1 calendar has seen the presence of the Monza circuit almost consistently, with only one exception in 1980 when the Italian Grand Prix took place at Imola. This iconic Italian track, currently measuring 5.793 kilometers, holds the distinction of being the first permanent circuit built in continental Europe. Despite undergoing modifications over the years, including the addition of three chicanes to reduce speed, Monza remains one of the fastest circuits. The Ascari chicane, named after the unfortunate incident where the two-time Italian world champion lost his life, is the first of these chicanes. Additionally, modifications were made to the second Lesmo corner in the 1990s. Nonetheless, Monza continues to be Formula 1’s superfast venue, known for hosting the shortest race of the season, with average speeds typically exceeding 230 km/h. Scuderia Ferrari has celebrated success at their home track on 19 occasions, with the first victory achieved by Alberto Ascari in 1951 and the most recent by Fernando Alonso in 2010.
THE INITIAL CHICANE AND BRAKING
Monza presents a significant challenge for brakes, which endure intense usage. This is particularly true at the first chicane, where cars decelerate from speeds of 300 km/h to under one hundred. It is considered one of the prime overtaking spots on the track.
LESMO 2
A well-executed exit from this turn is crucial to carry momentum through the Serraglio section, which includes one of the DRS activation zones. This sets the stage for a strong run towards the Ascari chicane.
