The new car from Maranello has already hit the track at Fiorano, revealing an interesting comparison between the Ferrari SF-24 and the SF-23.
Just over 20 minutes after the presentation, the SF-24 has already hit the track to test the mechanics of the new 2024 single-seater. Today’s program includes a few laps on the Fiorano track, the home track of the Prancing Horse. Tomorrow, Scuderia Ferrari will extend activities by conducting the first 200 km filming day. However, today’s program highlighted an interesting comparison between the SF-23 and the Ferrari SF-24.
Carlos Sainz, who had the honor of covering the first kilometers on board the SF-24, performed the maiden run of the new car on the track. This year’s presentation was much more subdued, in stark contrast to the spectacle and interviews of the 2023 event. Fred Vasseur‘s low-profile approach has focused the Maranello team on performance rather than appearance. As evidence of this, there is an interesting comparison between the cars of this season and those of 2023.
The excitement of the 2023 presentation had hidden some of the flaws that would later emerge during the 22 races. During the first installation laps, the SF-23 exhibited peculiar behavior on Fiorano’s short straight, with the vehicle body experiencing repeated vertical oscillations. The irregularity of the road surface is one of the causes to consider for these oscillations. However, the rear suspension failed to dampen these irregularities, causing unexpected vertical movements throughout the car.
The SF-24, despite covering very few kilometers on the road, seems to have started well, with the car maintaining its stable platform at the same points as last year. This suggests that Ferrari has worked extensively on the rear suspension kinematics, making it more “capable” of avoiding the track’s roughness. However, these considerations are speculative, as the chosen setup is likely different between the two cars. Despite this, there might be a sense of positivity emerging after these initial kilometers of the SF-24.
