We have fully entered the Imola weekend, the first European race of the 2024 Formula 1 season. Many teams are debuting updates on their cars for this first European event. Notably, Scuderia Ferrari has arrived at Imola with the SF-24 EVO, equipped with a completely redesigned rear wing.
Last Friday, the SF-24 EVO made its debut at Fiorano during the 200 km filming day authorized by the FIA. Many of the updates have focused on the side pods and the engine cover, which have been completely redesigned to achieve more downforce and better aerodynamic penetration.
After analyzing the major updates, we had the opportunity to closely examine the SF-24 EVO and all its details in the pit lane at Imola. The early stages of 2024 saw the SF-24 use the same rear wing geometry, managing downforce (DF) and drag with the beam wing. With the debut of the SF-24 EVO, Ferrari has also heavily modified the rear wing element, which is crucial for correctly functioning with the new aerodynamic map.
The first noticeable change is the different cut at the end of the upper flap, where the DRS mobile flap is anchored. Until the Miami Grand Prix, the SF-24 had a curvature that approached the endplate. Now, the cut is much sharper, and the upper flap has a more linear and upward trajectory. The edge that has formed can be considered almost like a sharp angle that generates vortices at the exit.
The primary role of these vortices is to improve air extraction from the upper surface of the wing, accelerating the air beneath the element.
Besides this easily visible modification, Ferrari has also adjusted the junction area between the mainplane and the endplate. Until Miami, this portion of the wing was quite thick to generate more local downforce. Now, with the aforementioned modification, the SF-24 EVO has a reduced camber in this area, which, while generating the same amount of downforce, significantly improves aerodynamic penetration.
