Ferrari: Ralf Schumacher uncovers the internal struggle Lewis Hamilton faces this year. Lewis Hamilton is facing challenges in his first season with Ferrari.

As the 2025 Formula 1 season progresses, Lewis Hamilton is finding himself facing unexpected challenges during his first year with Ferrari. A quarter of the way into the season, it appears that the team is not moving forward as anticipated, and Hamilton is witnessing what seems to be a regression rather than progress.

Hamilton’s debut at Ferrari was far from smooth, with both him and teammate Charles Leclerc struggling to break into the top 10 during the rain-soaked Australian Grand Prix. While Hamilton expressed dissatisfaction with Ferrari’s strategy during that race, it was initially easy to chalk it up to the unusual and difficult conditions. However, as the season has unfolded, it’s become increasingly clear that Ferrari is not in contention for the Constructors’ Championship, and their drivers are unlikely to challenge for top positions against strong competitors like McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.

Hamilton, in particular, has faced difficulties adapting to Ferrari’s car. The Miami Grand Prix proved to be another difficult weekend, with communication issues once again playing a central role. One specific radio message from Hamilton reportedly irked Ferrari, and former driver Ralf Schumacher believes this ongoing communication struggle is becoming a crucial issue that needs addressing within the team.

Ralf Schumacher spoke about the internal dynamics at Ferrari on the Backstage Boxengasse Podcast following the Miami Grand Prix, acknowledging Lewis Hamilton’s immense success and independence. However, he pointed out that such a strong personality must be handled carefully within a team environment. According to Ralf Schumacher, the Briton’s radio messages, while emotional, have the potential to create tension within the team, and Ferrari must address this issue internally. He suggested that Hamilton needs to recognize when to acknowledge missteps, offering an apology when necessary to move on from any disagreements.

The former Formula 1 driver also noted that Hamilton’s recent comments about letting teammate Carlos Sainz through during the race, despite his competitive nature, might not align with his current performance. He advised Hamilton to keep a more grounded approach, emphasizing that while his world champion status is undeniable, he should remain focused on the present challenges.

Ralf Schumacher went on to suggest that Hamilton could take a lesson from younger drivers, such as Oliver Bearman, who has adapted quickly at Haas. While the Ferrari junior is far less experienced than the seven-time Formula 1 world champion, Ralf Schumacher believes that the rookie’s fresh perspective has allowed him to avoid the entrenched habits that Hamilton, after 12 seasons at Mercedes, may be struggling to break free from.

Lewis Hamilton’s relationship with his new race engineer, Riccardo Adami, is slowly improving, but it will take time for them to develop the same synergy that Lewis Hamilton had with his long-time Mercedes engineer, Peter Bonnington. However, Hamilton’s situation is not unique at Ferrari. Both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have faced similar struggles with the team’s indecisiveness in the past, and this ongoing challenge has only added to the list of problems that team principal Fred Vasseur must now address. As Ferrari works to adapt to the changing dynamics, Hamilton, like his teammates, must navigate these hurdles if he is to find success in the Maranello team.
