Scuderia Ferrari is preparing to return to the track for one of the most important test sessions of its 2025 Formula 1 campaign. The Italian team is set to conduct a vital filming day with the SF-25, during which it will test the long-awaited new rear suspension that could prove decisive for the second half of the season. This technical update, which was initially expected to debut at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, is now scheduled for its first on-track appearance ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps.
The test will take place on Tuesday, July 16, 2025, at the Mugello Circuit—Ferrari’s own track facility located in Tuscany. During the filming day, the SF-25 will be fitted with the new rear suspension as the Scuderia aims to gather critical performance data. The team will be limited to a maximum of 200 kilometers of running, in accordance with the regulations governing promotional filming days. However, those laps will be extremely valuable in validating the results obtained so far from simulations and wind tunnel testing.
Ferrari’s engineering team will analyze the fresh on-track data and compare it with what they previously observed in the simulator to determine whether the new suspension concept delivers the expected benefits in terms of performance, stability, and tire management. The outcome of this filming day could influence whether the team proceeds with implementing the upgrade fully during the next race weekend at Spa.
This test comes at a pivotal moment in the 2025 Formula 1 season, which marks the sport’s 75th anniversary. As the championship enters its second half, teams are facing a major strategic crossroads: should they continue investing resources into their current 2025 cars, or shift their full focus to the radically different regulations coming in 2026?
For Scuderia Ferrari, the answer is not simple. While the long-term goal is clearly 2026, the team is still fighting to remain competitive in the current standings. McLaren has emerged as the dominant force so far in the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship, leading both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ standings and consistently outperforming rivals in all conditions. Ferrari, currently McLaren’s closest challenger, trails by over 200 points in the Constructors’ Championship—an enormous gap, but one that the Italian team is not ready to accept without a fight.
After introducing a new floor at the Austrian Grand Prix, Ferrari now hopes that the upcoming rear suspension upgrade can bring the SF-25 closer to McLaren’s level. Internal sources had initially suggested that the component might debut at Silverstone, but development delays and the desire for thorough validation have pushed the real debut toward Spa, pending successful results at Mugello.
The outcome of this crucial test at Mugello will help Ferrari decide whether the suspension will be used during the Belgian Grand Prix or postponed further. A successful result could offer a much-needed performance boost, particularly on demanding circuits like Spa-Francorchamps, where traction, stability under load, and aerodynamic balance are vital.
As confirmed by Motorsport.com, the filming day is officially scheduled for July 16, 2025. The results could shape not just Ferrari’s short-term competitiveness, but also inform strategic decisions as the team balances its 2025 ambitions with the development of its 2026 challenger under the new Formula 1 regulations.
