28 May in Ferrari History: Sebastian Vettel Leads a Monaco One-Two
On 28 May 2017, Ferrari ended a long wait for victory in Monaco. Sebastian Vettel won ahead of Kimi Räikkönen, securing a one-two finish on the streets of Monte Carlo.
2017: Sebastian Vettel emerges ahead after the pit stops
Kimi Räikkönen started from pole position and led the opening part of the race. Sebastian Vettel ran behind his team-mate before the pit-stop sequence changed their order.
By staying out longer and producing the pace required before his own stop, Sebastian Vettel emerged in front. He retained the lead to the finish, with Kimi Räikkönen second and Daniel Ricciardo third for Red Bull.
The result increased Sebastian Vettel’s championship advantage over Lewis Hamilton to 25 points. Monaco therefore brought both a prestigious race victory and a valuable step in the title contest.
Ferrari ends two lengthy waits
The Scuderia had not won the Monaco Grand Prix since Michael Schumacher’s victory in 2001. Its previous one-two finish had come at the 2010 German Grand Prix.
Bringing those two sequences to an end made the afternoon a significant team achievement, even though the reversal of the Ferrari drivers’ starting order left them with different feelings about the result.
