Ferrari’s final SF-26 Austin upgrades carry a risk – but could shape its 2027 F1 car

Ferrari is preparing to introduce its final major upgrade package for the SF-26 at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, offering an opportunity to return to winning ways but also presenting a significant development risk. The new components could prove important not only for the remainder of the 2026 Formula 1 season, but also for the development of Ferrari’s 2027 car, as the Maranello team looks to validate its aerodynamic concepts and simulation methods under real track conditions.

Rivals such as McLaren and Mercedes have demonstrated how complex the new generation of Formula 1 cars has already become, with aerodynamic developments no longer guaranteed to deliver immediate performance improvements. That is precisely why Ferrari needs to accept the possibility of setbacks: testing new solutions on track will help establish whether the development methods being used for its 2027 project can accurately predict how the car will behave.

Ferrari SF-26 Austin upgrades come with aerodynamic risks

According to AutoRacer, Ferrari will introduce a substantial upgrade package in Austin, including changes to the floor and bodywork. The hope at Maranello is that these developments will help the team return to contention for victories, although a significant performance improvement is far from guaranteed. The changes form part of Ferrari’s final major aerodynamic development package for the SF-26, with the focus now increasingly shifting towards the following season.

McLaren and Mercedes provide examples of the difficulties involved. Both teams have recently introduced numerous upgrades that successfully increased aerodynamic downforce, yet struggled to translate those gains into faster lap times. In both cases, the underlying problem has been an excessively narrow operating window. Although the cars generate more downforce, the improvement is available only within a limited range of conditions, producing unpredictable handling, inconsistent balance and greater difficulties for the drivers.

This represents a reversal of the trend seen during the first half of the season. At the beginning of 2026, the new-generation cars were still relatively immature from an aerodynamic perspective, meaning upgrades could deliver substantial improvements in lap times. Now, without reaching the extremes associated with the previous ground-effect generation, the situation is beginning to resemble the final years of that regulatory era, when teams frequently discovered unexpected side effects only after introducing new components on track.

Wind tunnel testing and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations cannot reproduce every physical phenomenon encountered in real-world conditions, including the movement of the floor relative to the track surface. The current cars remain sensitive to ride height, although the relationship between aerodynamic performance and ground clearance has changed. With the previous ground-effect cars, running closer to the ground generally produced more downforce. Under the current regulations, however, there is an optimal distance from the track surface at which aerodynamic efficiency reaches its maximum.

Why Ferrari must identify the SF-26’s development limitations

Another factor is the increasing sophistication of the current generation of Formula 1 machinery. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella recently observed that these cars have effectively undergone two years of development, with the first simulation work beginning in January 2025.

As development has progressed, aerodynamic solutions have become increasingly elaborate, airflow structures more complicated and the relationships between individual components more interconnected. This growing complexity is beginning to expose the limitations of each team’s fundamental car concept, revealing which designs still offer significant development potential and which may require a different approach for 2027.

Ferrari’s Austin upgrades should therefore provide valuable indications about the remaining potential of the SF-26 and the direction Maranello needs to follow next season. There is a genuine possibility that the team could encounter an unsuccessful development step or unexpected aerodynamic side effects. However, discovering those weaknesses on track would itself provide useful information for the future.

Despite some relatively minor regulatory differences, the aerodynamics of the 2027 cars will represent an evolution of the current generation. Consequently, the knowledge accumulated through testing and racing the SF-26 can be transferred to the next project, helping Ferrari improve the accuracy and reliability of its simulation methods. The wider evolution of the car and its design philosophy can also be followed through Ferrari’s technical development analysis.

Ferrari hopes Austin upgrades will address rear grip and straight-line weaknesses

The United States Grand Prix will also provide an opportunity to establish whether the new components can correct some of the SF-26’s existing handling characteristics. Ferrari currently has a precise front end and good balance through high-speed corners, but suffers from insufficient rear grip when accelerating out of slower turns. These shortcomings remain an important consideration as the team searches for more performance.

Another weakness is excessive aerodynamic drag, which makes it more difficult to compensate for the lack of power unit performance and contributes to valuable time being lost on the straights. The relationship between aerodynamic efficiency and straight-line performance is particularly important, although recorded maximum speeds are also influenced by factors such as energy deployment, slipstreaming and corner exits. These differences can be explored through the F1 Top Speed Comparison.

The new package will therefore be an important test of whether Ferrari can improve the SF-26’s overall performance without creating additional compromises. It also comes after Charles Leclerc raised concerns about Ferrari losing ground to its rivals, increasing the significance of the final major development step of the season.

How 2027 F1 regulations could change Ferrari’s development priorities

However, the design decisions Ferrari has already made, and those it will continue to make for its 2027 Formula 1 car, must also account for several additional variables. Pirelli is preparing changes to next year’s tyres, including a slight increase in thermal degradation. This could encourage teams to reconsider the relationship between tyre behaviour and aerodynamic performance when defining their future car concepts.

Changes to the power unit regulations will also reduce the demands of energy management and the output of the electrical component. It remains to be seen how significantly these modifications will reduce the stress placed on the rear tyres during acceleration, and whether the 2027 cars will be able to attack high-speed corners more aggressively without needing to recharge their batteries.

If that proves to be the case, aerodynamic downforce could become more rewarding, potentially changing the characteristics required for a competitive car. A technical concept that proves successful in 2026 may therefore not necessarily remain the strongest solution in 2027.

For Ferrari, as for its competitors, introducing upgrades during the current season is consequently about much more than chasing immediate lap-time improvements. Even when new developments involve risks, testing them in competitive conditions helps teams understand their limitations, refine their simulation tools and establish a stronger technical foundation for the following year. The Austin package represents both an opportunity to improve the SF-26 and an important step towards determining the direction of Ferrari’s 2027 challenger.
