12 May in Ferrari history: Fernando Alonso wins the Spanish Grand Prix
On 12 May 2013, Fernando Alonso won the Spanish Grand Prix for Ferrari in front of his home crowd. Felipe Massa finished third, adding a second Ferrari to the podium at the Circuit de Catalunya.
Alonso turns fifth on the grid into victory
Starting fifth, Alonso gained two positions on the opening lap by passing Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Räikkönen. That early progress put him in contention, but tyre management and pit-stop timing remained central to the race.
Ferrari committed to a four-stop strategy. Alonso used the pace available on fresher tyres to make that approach work, overcoming the disadvantage of an additional stop compared with Räikkönen, who finished second.
The victory showed how a race could be won through the combined effect of overtaking, sustained pace and a strategy suited to the conditions.
Massa adds another Ferrari podium
Massa’s third place made the afternoon more than an individual home success for Alonso. Ferrari placed both cars among the leading three, securing a strong team result.
The Brazilian’s contribution forms part of the wider career covered in our Felipe Massa Formula 1 records.
