Methodology: Grand Prix starts, points, constructor breakdowns and season summaries are calculated from locally processed F1DB race and Sprint results. Points use the same race-result definition across career, Ferrari, constructor and season views so the totals reconcile. Official season championship points are retained separately and noted where historical dropped-score rules create a difference. Career wins, podiums, poles and fastest laps use F1DB driver-level totals where available.

Alain Prost Formula 1 career statistics

Alain Prost competed in Formula 1 from 1980 through 1991 before returning for one final season in 1993. His career included McLaren, Renault, Ferrari and Williams and made him one of the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history.

His complete Formula 1 record includes 199 official Grand Prix starts, 51 victories, 106 podium finishes, 33 pole positions, 41 fastest laps and four Drivers’ World Championships.

Alain Prost’s Formula 1 debut with McLaren

Prost made his Formula 1 debut with McLaren at the 1980 Argentine Grand Prix. He scored points on his first appearance before completing his rookie season with the British team.

After one year with McLaren, Prost moved to Renault for 1981 and began the period in which he established himself as a regular Grand Prix winner and championship contender.

Alain Prost at Renault

Prost joined Renault for the 1981 Formula 1 season and recorded his first Grand Prix victory at his home French Grand Prix.

He spent three seasons with Renault, winning nine races and finishing runner-up in the 1983 Drivers’ World Championship before returning to McLaren.

Alain Prost returns to McLaren

Prost returned to McLaren for the 1984 season and immediately fought team-mate Niki Lauda for the Drivers’ World Championship. He won seven races but finished just half a point behind Lauda in the final standings.

The following seasons established Prost as a multiple World Champion and one of Formula 1’s leading drivers.

Alain Prost’s first Formula 1 World Championship

Prost won his first Drivers’ World Championship with McLaren in 1985 after recording five Grand Prix victories during the season.

He successfully defended the title in 1986, becoming a two-time Formula 1 World Champion before adding further championships later in his career.

Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna at McLaren

Prost and Ayrton Senna became McLaren team-mates for the 1988 and 1989 seasons. Their partnership produced exceptional results for the team but also developed into one of Formula 1’s most intense sporting rivalries.

Prost finished runner-up in 1988 before winning his third Drivers’ World Championship in 1989.

Alain Prost joins Ferrari

Prost moved from McLaren to Ferrari for the 1990 Formula 1 season and partnered Nigel Mansell. He arrived at Maranello as the reigning World Champion and immediately became Ferrari’s leading contender for the Drivers’ title.

His first Ferrari Grand Prix start came at the 1990 United States Grand Prix in Phoenix.

Alain Prost’s first Ferrari victory

Prost’s first Ferrari victory came at the 1990 Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos. It was only his second race for the Scuderia and gave Ferrari an early victory during a season that developed into a close championship battle.

Further wins followed in Mexico, France, Great Britain and Spain.

Alain Prost’s 1990 Ferrari title challenge

The 1990 season became the defining chapter of Prost’s Ferrari career. He recorded five Grand Prix victories, nine podium finishes and two fastest laps while fighting Ayrton Senna for the Drivers’ World Championship.

Prost scored 73 points from individual race results during the season, although only 71 counted towards his official championship classification under the dropped-score regulations then in force.

Alain Prost wins the 1990 Mexican Grand Prix

Prost recorded his second Ferrari victory at the 1990 Mexican Grand Prix. Starting 13th, he moved through the field to win ahead of Ferrari team-mate Nigel Mansell.

The Ferrari one-two strengthened Prost’s championship campaign and began a sequence of three consecutive victories for the French driver.

Alain Prost gives Ferrari its 100th Formula 1 victory

Prost won the 1990 French Grand Prix at Paul Ricard, overtaking Ivan Capelli late in the race to secure his third victory of the season.

The result represented Ferrari’s 100th Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix victory, making Prost’s home win an important milestone in Scuderia history.

Alain Prost wins the 1990 British Grand Prix

Prost followed his French Grand Prix success with victory at Silverstone. The result completed a run of three consecutive Ferrari victories in Mexico, France and Great Britain.

Those results placed Prost firmly in contention with Ayrton Senna as the championship moved into the second half of the season.

Alain Prost’s final Ferrari victory

Prost’s fifth and final Formula 1 victory for Ferrari came at the 1990 Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez. He won ahead of Nigel Mansell as Ferrari recorded another one-two finish.

The result ensured that the Drivers’ Championship battle between Prost and Ayrton Senna would continue to the Japanese Grand Prix.

Alain Prost and the 1990 Japanese Grand Prix

The 1990 Drivers’ World Championship reached its decisive stage at Suzuka. Prost and Ayrton Senna collided at the first corner shortly after the start, eliminating both drivers from the race.

The result left Prost unable to overturn Ayrton Senna’s championship advantage and confirmed Prost as runner-up in his first Ferrari season.

Alain Prost Ferrari F1 statistics

Prost made 30 official Grand Prix starts for Ferrari during the 1990 and 1991 seasons. His Ferrari record includes five victories, 14 podium finishes, no pole positions, three fastest laps and 107 race-result points.

All five Ferrari victories came during 1990, when Prost finished runner-up in the Drivers’ World Championship.

Alain Prost’s Ferrari victories

Prost won five Formula 1 Grands Prix for Ferrari: Brazil, Mexico, France, Great Britain and Spain, all during the 1990 season.

His French Grand Prix victory was especially significant because it delivered Ferrari’s 100th Formula 1 World Championship race win.

Alain Prost’s Ferrari podiums

Prost recorded 14 podium finishes during his Ferrari career. Nine came during his 1990 title challenge and another five followed during the 1991 season.

Although he remained a regular podium contender in 1991, he did not add another Grand Prix victory to his Ferrari record.

Alain Prost and Ferrari pole positions

Despite recording 33 pole positions during his Formula 1 career, Prost did not take a pole position during his two seasons with Ferrari.

His best Ferrari qualifying position was second, although he frequently started near the front during both 1990 and 1991.

Alain Prost fastest laps

Prost recorded 41 fastest laps during his Formula 1 career. Three came while racing for Ferrari, with two during the 1990 season and one in 1991.

For a broader historical view of race fastest laps by driver and constructor, visit the F1 Fastest Laps & Race Performance Records database.

Alain Prost’s 1991 Ferrari season

Prost remained with Ferrari for the 1991 season, now partnered by Jean Alesi. Ferrari was unable to reproduce the competitiveness of the previous year, and Prost completed the season without a Grand Prix victory.

He nevertheless recorded five podium finishes and scored 34 championship points from his official race results.

Why Alain Prost has 30 Ferrari starts but 31 entries

Prost was entered in 31 Formula 1 Grands Prix during his Ferrari career but officially started 30.

The difference comes from the 1991 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola. Prost qualified third but spun off during the formation lap and therefore did not take the race start.

Alain Prost’s final Ferrari Grand Prix

Prost’s final Formula 1 start for Ferrari came at the 1991 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka. He finished fourth in what became his last race appearance for the Scuderia.

He did not compete in the season-ending Australian Grand Prix, bringing his Ferrari career to a close after 30 official starts across two seasons.

Alain Prost F1 career by constructor

Prost’s Formula 1 career included McLaren, Renault, Ferrari and Williams. The constructor table above separates his achievements with each team so that the relatively short but successful Ferrari period remains distinct from his championship-winning spells elsewhere.

His 199 official Formula 1 starts consist of 107 with McLaren, 46 with Renault, 30 with Ferrari and 16 with Williams.

Alain Prost wins, podiums and pole positions

Prost completed his Formula 1 career with 51 victories, 106 podium finishes and 33 pole positions.

Five victories and 14 podiums came with Ferrari, although none of his 33 career pole positions were achieved while driving for the Scuderia.

Alain Prost’s year away from Formula 1

After leaving Ferrari at the end of 1991, Prost did not compete in the 1992 Formula 1 season.

He returned to the championship with Williams in 1993, beginning the final and highly successful season of his Formula 1 career.

Alain Prost joins Williams

Prost joined Williams for the 1993 Formula 1 season and immediately returned to championship contention. Driving the Williams-Renault, he won seven Grands Prix and recorded 13 pole positions.

The season delivered Prost’s fourth Drivers’ World Championship.

Alain Prost’s fourth Formula 1 World Championship

Prost secured his fourth and final Drivers’ World Championship in 1993 with Williams. His seven victories and consistent results gave him a decisive advantage in the standings.

The title joined the championships he had previously won with McLaren in 1985, 1986 and 1989.

Alain Prost’s final Formula 1 victory

Prost’s 51st and final Formula 1 victory came at the 1993 German Grand Prix at Hockenheim while driving for Williams.

That victory completed a winning career that had begun with Renault at the 1981 French Grand Prix and included successes with Renault, McLaren, Ferrari and Williams.

Alain Prost’s final Formula 1 race

Prost made his final Formula 1 start at the 1993 Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide. He finished second and retired from Formula 1 as the reigning World Champion.

His career ended with 199 official starts, 51 victories, 106 podium finishes, 33 pole positions, 41 fastest laps and four Drivers’ World Championships.

Alain Prost season-by-season F1 statistics

The season-by-season table provides a chronological view of Prost’s Formula 1 career from his 1980 debut through his final championship-winning season in 1993.

It separates his Renault period, his two spells with McLaren, his Ferrari seasons and his final year with Williams.

Alain Prost and historical Formula 1 points

Several seasons of Prost’s career took place while Formula 1 still used dropped-score regulations. This means his points actually earned from individual race results can exceed the total officially counted towards the Drivers’ Championship.

The statistics tables therefore display race-result points consistently across career, constructor and season totals. Championship position remains based on the official historical standings.

For example, Prost scored 73 points from race results during his 1990 Ferrari season, while 71 counted towards his official championship classification. Across his complete career, the equivalent totals are 798.5 race-result points and 768.5 championship-counted points.

Alain Prost’s place in Ferrari history

Prost’s Ferrari career lasted less than two complete seasons, but it included one of the Scuderia’s strongest championship challenges of the early 1990s.

His Ferrari record consists of 30 official starts, five victories, 14 podium finishes and three fastest laps, while his 1990 French Grand Prix victory delivered Ferrari’s 100th Formula 1 World Championship race win.

Prost also finished runner-up in the 1990 Drivers’ World Championship, taking the title battle against Ayrton Senna to the penultimate round at Suzuka.

Alain Prost circuit records

Prost’s Formula 1 career produced victories across a wide range of circuits and technical eras, including Ferrari successes at Interlagos, Mexico City, Paul Ricard, Silverstone and Jerez.

How Alain Prost’s F1 records are calculated

The statistics on this page are generated from locally processed historical Formula 1 data. Career totals, constructor records, Ferrari-specific results and season-by-season statistics are calculated separately so that Prost’s achievements with McLaren, Renault, Ferrari and Williams remain correctly attributed.

Race entries and official Grand Prix starts are treated separately. Prost had 31 Ferrari entries but 30 official starts because he did not start the 1991 San Marino Grand Prix after spinning during the formation lap.

Historical championship scoring is also treated separately from race-result points so that constructor, season and career totals remain mathematically consistent while official championship positions are preserved.
