Oliver Bearman secured the best result of his Formula 1 career at the Mexican Grand Prix, narrowly missing out on a podium after delivering a flawless performance for Haas. The young English driver impressed fans and teams alike, earning the prestigious ‘Driver of the Day’ award.
Bearman undeniable on the track
With just four races remaining in the championship, the drivers’ standings have a new leader. Lando Norris now tops the table following his win in Mexico City. However, despite Lando Norris’ undisputed success at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, the ‘Driver of the Day’ honor went to someone else. Oliver Bearman surprised many by combining a strong qualifying result with an exceptional race performance, ultimately finishing in fourth place.
Close to the podium for most of the GP
The young Haas driver delivered an outstanding performance, capitalizing at the start on the battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen to move into third place. The dream of a first Formula 1 podium slipped away only due to strategic decisions, with Haas successfully defending against undercuts from Oscar Piastri and Kimi Antonelli. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen, starting on medium tires and switching to softs, moved into third, coming very close to overtaking Charles Leclerc for second.
Ollie Bearman’s performance was highly impressive. Last year, he had already made waves substituting for Carlos Sainz at his F1 debut in Saudi Arabia with Ferrari, finishing seventh. Reflecting on his performance in Mexico, he said to Sky Sport F1: “Being named Driver of the Day is an amazing recognition. It was a fantastic race – we were already in a good position and I took advantage of the incident on lap four. The pace was excellent; the Mercedes and Oscar Piastri were close but didn’t have enough to pass me. Huge credit to the team, they did an incredible job. When I stopped for the second time, I didn’t know the others would also pit, but in the end, everything went perfectly. I preferred to defend my position rather than risk third place.” – the Ferrari junior pointed out at the end of the Mexico City Grand Prix.
Haas makes progress in the Constructors’ Championship
The strong team performance was further confirmed by Esteban Ocon’s ninth-place finish, which helped Haas move ahead of Sauber to eighth in the Constructors’ standings. Ocon said: “It was a very solid race and we’re very satisfied with our weekend overall. We didn’t have all the luck on our side, being in the wrong place at the wrong time in both qualifying and the race with the same car. Congratulations to Ollie and to the whole team; we’ve gained a position in the Constructors’ Championship with a good haul of points, and we should be proud of that.”
