Ferrari driver finishes eighth in Mexico
Charles Leclerc finished the Mexican Grand Prix in second place, but Lewis Hamilton could potentially have been in that position. The seven-time world champion was second through Turn 1 after the start, but the track cuts by Leclerc and Max Verstappen caused chaos once the two 1997-born drivers rejoined the circuit. Max Verstappen settled in fourth behind the two Ferraris, while Charles Leclerc took second place.
Penalty controversy
Hamilton requested the position over the radio from the Ferrari pit wall, but the team did not intervene regarding Charles Leclerc. During a subsequent duel with Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton cut the second chicane and did not give back the position, earning a 10-second penalty that ultimately compromised his race, finishing in eighth.
Hamilton speaks out
“I’m disappointed by those in charge,” Lewis Hamilton said post-race regarding the penalty, pointing to the lack of action against Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen at the start. “There are clearly double standards. Things didn’t go as I hoped. I made a good start, but everything changed due to decisions outside my control, and from that point, it was impossible to recover the race. The stint on the medium tires was challenging because they didn’t suit the track conditions today, and in the final phase, we lacked the pace we needed. Overall, though, we had a good car all weekend, and I’m grateful for the progress we made as a team. I’m really looking forward to Brazil—it’s one of my favorite races, and it will be special racing there in red for the first time.”
