Formula 1 returns to Las Vegas after more than forty years. What kind of weekend will it be? Many believe that the show, on and off the track, will take center stage. Others, however, are convinced that the event in Nevada has little to do with the world of racing. In between, there are those who, having formed their own opinion, are waiting to see what will happen. Among them is journalist Leo Turrini, who has dedicated a focus to the event and the growth of modern Formula 1 in the columns of quotidiano.net.
Leo Turrini’s analysis of Las Vegas and modern F1
“It’s a carnival. It will be the usual concession to bad taste with stars and stripes. Tell me if there was a need for another city circuit. Stefano Domenicali sold his soul to Uncle Sam. I recommend the madness of a night race with temperatures near zero, an absurd condition for Grand Prix single-seaters. Just to pocket dollars, they jeopardize the safety of the drivers. Finally, it’s no longer the Formula One of the past,” Leo Turrini begins, listing the complaints of those who are playing the role of detractors of the event these days.
He then continues: “At my venerable age, I have the right to take all the above complaints as valid. Adding one, for intellectual honesty: I (we?) have nostalgia for a youth that will not return. That is: it is not true that the F1 of my (your?) twenties/thirties was always splendid. Not by chance, Bernie Ecclestone had already been to Las Vegas some decades ago. Absolute junk, apart from the memory of a triumph by the beloved Alboreto with the Tyrrell.” – the Ferrari insider continued.
After all, the numbers produced by Liberty Media indicate that the sport is in a great phase of expansion. “I may not like it, but around the world, F1 has never been as popular as it is now. There has never been so many people in the racetracks,” emphasizes the journalist. He then justifies the negative trend recorded in Imola and Monza as follows: “Italy, due to Ferrari, is a different story.” – he pointed out.

“It could be the Netflix effect. It could be the wrestling style. It could also be that there is a new audience, which is on average forty years younger than me and has an approach to racing that is distinct and distant from mine. It may be, of course, a passing trend, a hit and run. It may be that these types of fans won’t ‘become loyal,’ they will quickly find alternative entertainment. However, it is not wise to ignore the existence of a reality, even if, in certain aspects, it is incomprehensible to my eyes,” observes Turrini, referring to the skeptics. Finally, he concludes by writing: “I doubt that the show in Las Vegas will thrill me. On the contrary, I fear the worst. However, to understand if a pudding is good, you have to eat it first…” – Leo Turrini concluded.
