During the weekends of Spa-Francorchamps and Monza, all the limits of the technical regulation concerning the power units emerged. With only three power units allowed for the entire season, a large number of drivers decided to take advantage of the characteristics of the Belgian and Italian track in order to replace many components of their engine and therefore have fresh parts, with the hope of being able to conclude the 2022 Formula 1 championship without other grid penalties.
However, this caused great chaos after the qualifying session, especially in Monza, with teams having to wait for the FIA press release to find out the correct starting position of their drivers.
Mattia Binotto hit out at the regulation
A situation that did not please anyone and Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto also expressed his disapproval for the way in which the regulations have been defined: “The regulation is not clear enough. There are different interpretations and this is the reason why we had to wait so long to know the exact starting order on Saturday night” – the Ferrari boss pointed out, as reported by Autosport.
The reference is obviously clear and is aimed at the fact that based on what was usually done by the race stewards, Max Verstappen, who had a penalty of five positions to take on the grid, would have started fourth, while instead he started the Italian Grand Prix from seventh place.

The modifications requested by Ferrari
“We absolutely have to address this issue from a future perspective: I think we need to review both the way the grid order is established based on penalties and the system of penalties which is applied for the power units,” the Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto said before concluding on this matter: “I think the current one is too severe. It is difficult for the fans to see the car that set the fastest lap on Saturday starting from the back. Having only three power units per season is a far too low a number looking at what we have managed to achieve.”
