A driver has no doubts about how much the Ferrari power unit could influence the performance of several Formula 1 teams in the 2026 season.
The upcoming championship promises to be filled with uncertainties. The major regulatory overhaul scheduled for 2026 will increase the number of variables and potential risks for all teams, making the competition even more unpredictable than in recent years. Among the most significant changes will be the introduction of an all-new generation of power units, meaning that manufacturers such as Ferrari and Mercedes will face the challenge of arriving fully prepared for the season opener.
For Scuderia Ferrari, based in Maranello, 2026 will also mark the beginning of a new supply deal. Starting next year, the Italian team will provide its engines to the debuting Cadillac Formula 1 team. The agreement, announced some time ago, is a bold step for the American outfit, which hopes this partnership will prove to be the right choice as it embarks on its first season in the sport.
No doubts about a decisive factor
On this subject, some voices in the racing world are convinced that the Ferrari engine could be one of the decisive elements in shifting the competitive balance, particularly for a brand-new team like Cadillac. Canadian racing driver and former IndyCar star James Hinchcliffe, speaking to Formula 1’s official channels, stated: “Cadillac will be using Ferrari engines in 2026. Because of that, we might see this team already achieving good results in the standings despite it being their first year in the sport. On top of that, they will have Sergio ‘Checo’ Pérez, who knows how to win and is extremely competitive—he has already proven that while racing alongside Max Verstappen.”
This combination of a proven race winner and a power unit from one of the most prestigious names in Formula 1 history could give Cadillac an edge, even against more established teams.
The arrival of the new generation of engines will undoubtedly have a significant impact on on-track performance in 2026. After many years of relative stability in engine technology and reliability, the new regulations could reintroduce mechanical challenges and reliability issues that may add a new layer of unpredictability to the championship. This means that engine performance, efficiency, and durability could once again play a decisive role in determining race outcomes and championship standings.
