Formula 1 legend and former two-time Scuderia Ferrari driver Gerhard Berger feels that Red Bull could have an important advantage over the Maranello team in the fight for the 2022 Formula 1 world championships when it comes to the drivers line-ups due to the dynamics inside the team.
Recently, Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto claimed that the Italian side has the best driver pairing on the grid, but Gerhard Berger points out that Red Bull have a clear hierarchy which is being respected and could prove more efficient: “That is what you say in this situation, no matter what you really think,” Gerhard Berger said, in an interview for motorsport show ‘Speed Week’ – “Since the second driver has been signed for a longer period, you have to underline that, of course,” he explained, when asked about Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz.
Gerhard Berger therefore believes Red Bull is in a better situation with Max Verstappen as the clear number 1 alongside Sergio Perez, who will help the Dutch driver when needed: “Yes, Perez has really improved a lot, also as a team player,” Gerhard Berger, now the DTM series boss, admitted – “Unlike Carlos Sainz, he knows his situation well. Sainz still has ambitions to fight to be number 1 at Ferrari. It won’t work for him, but he can’t help it. Ferrari could have a problem with that, as Sainz is not ready to be number 2 just yet.” – he added.
As for Formula 1 more generally, though, the former Ferrari driver is pleased with the impact of the new rules and regulations for the 2022 Formula 1 season, but at the same time he has a one big criticism: “The cars are too heavy – they’re like small trucks,” said the Austrian. “800 kilograms is too much. In our time, the cars weighed 550kg. The extra weight is explained by this hybrid formula.” – Gerhard Berger concluded.
