Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto confirmed that Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will be free to fight for the win in the next round of the 2022 Formula 1 season, the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at the Imola circuit, in front of the Maranello team’s fans.
After the Australian Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc is leading the 2022 F1 championship, with two race wins from the three events this season (in Bahrain and Australia), while his teammate Carlos Sainz scored two solid podium finishes in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, but had a disappointing weekend at the Albert Park circuit, leaving Australian without any points, which has already created a big gap to his teammate in the Formula 1 Driver Standings.
Formula One now returns to Scuderia Ferrari’s spiritual home of Imola four the fourth race of the year and Mattia Binotto has promised the passionate Tifosi that Charles and Carlos will be allowed to fight each other at Imola: “They are free to fight and that is important for us. For Carlos, I think it is really important for him to put the speed and the pace and I think it really will come back. Charles is very focused right now, he is driving very well. Last year was important for him and for his growth and if you look as well in term of tyre management he has been very good. I will enjoy, then, the battle for a good and fair position in the championship.” – he explained.
Red Bull boss Christian Horner said at the end of the 2022 Australian Grand Prix that the F1-75 cars were “unstoppable” around the Albert Park circuit, thanks to an ideal setup that allowed Ferrari to be fast while also having limited tyre degradation, as opposed to Red Bull.

However, Mattia Binotto is well aware that Red Bull and even Mercedes will be looking to bounce back in the start of the European season. Max Verstppen retireed for the second time in two races, as Red Bull will bring several reliability updates at Imola, but also other changes that will reduce the weight of the RB18 Formula 1 car, which will of course allow it to gain in terms of pace: “I don’t know if [we] will be unstoppable. Each single race will be different but it will be great to be in Imola now with such a great start to the season, after a win, to go there, there will be a lot of Tifosi. I just remember where we are coming in the morning and entering the paddock with all the fans there, it’s a great emotion. So we are very happy, we are looking forward to it and we hope that there will be a lot of Tifosi there.” – the Ferrari boss concluded.
