The rotation of the power units by Scuderia Ferrari last weekend and the consequent penalties received by Scuderia Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc on the starting grid were one of the most discussed topics during the Canadian Grand Prix weekend. The Maranello team was forced to start from the back with the Monegasque driver due to the power unit failures suffered in Spain and Azerbajian, which had inevitably compromised some components of the previous power unit.
In Montreal, however, the Italian side has stocked up on new engine parts, looking with optimism at least at the next races until the summer break.
The issue suffered at the Baku City Circuit by Charles Leclerc’s F1-75 had damaged his turbo and MGU-H, making it necessary for Ferrari to replace them for the Canadian Grand Prix. However, since after the failure experienced in Spain, the Monegasque was already at the limit with the number of turbochargers and therefore a single new part would have been enough to lead to a penalty on Sunday, so Ferrari deliberately opted to also introduce other components at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal in order to have a pool of spare parts.
For this reason, two thermal engines have been replaced on the F1-75 car of Charles Leclerc, two MGU-Hs, two MGU-Ks, two control units, a turbine but no battery. It should be noted that Carlos Sainz also used the third power unit in Canada, after the second unit had already competed in the Grand Prix of Imola, Miami, Spain and Baku.
Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto expressed optimism and hope that his team will not encounter the recent reliability issues, at least for the next few races, during which the Italian side will work on possible solutions for the issues: “The problems we had in Baku occurred at mileage at which we did not expect them to, but not very low mileage either. We have now introduced two new power units with Charles and this gives us some breathing space. Unless unexpected situations, I would say that reliability for the next races is not a concern or at least that it is under control”.

The Ferrari Team Principal also did not rule out a correlation between the failures suffered in Baku and Spain, with one as a consequence of the other, thus not believing that there is a particular problem with the second power unit itself as compared to the to the specification used in the start of the 2022 Formula 1 championship.
