Carlos Sainz admits having fastest car in Canada adds to pain of missing out on first win. Carlos: ‘Hurts’ to have fastest car and not win in Canada.

After missing out on the race win in the 2022 Canadian Grand Prix last weekend, Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz admitted the second place finish at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal is even more painful due to the fact that his F1-75 was in fact slightly faster than the Red Bull RB18, unfortunately not enough for Carlos to be able to overtake Max Verstappen in the final stages of the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday.

Carlos Sainz is considered a top driver in Formula 1, but at the same time he is nearing some unwanted record lists: most Grand Prix starts without a win and most podiums without a win.

The next round of the 2022 Formula 1 season, the British Grand Prix, will be Carlos Sainz’s 150th race start and he is now seventh on the first list, but still a long way off Andrea de Cesaris’ record of 208 starts, while on the podiums list, he is up to third.

The Ferrari driver has finished on the podium 11 times without scoring a race victory, as the record for that stat goes to Nick Heidfeld: the German former F1 driver collected 13 podiums of which none were a race win.

“The fact that victory does not come when you are the fastest perhaps hurts more.” – Carlos Sainz admitted, in an interview for DAZN F1 after the Canadian Grand Prix last weekend.

Max Verstappen also confirmed that the Spaniard had the faster car at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, adding “yeah, absolutely”, but the F1-75 was only two-three tenths faster and given the track characteristics of the Canadian circuit, you need to be at least five tenths faster to attempt an overtaking move, as the Dutchman was able to capitalize on his track positions thanks to his pole position start.

Carlos Sainz added: “I am not satisfied. It’s been too close to be satisfied. Especially with the pace I’ve had throughout the race, which has been very good. I have been very comfortable, all the time a little faster than Max.”

The Ferrari driver was in front of Max Verstappen in P1 when the Safety Car was deployed with 20 laps to go due to a crash involving the AlphaTauri car of Yuki Tsunoda. The Maranello team immediately reacted and decided to pit the Spanish driver for a new set of hard tyres, after Max Verstappen was also switched to a two-stopper six laps earlier, as Ferrari feared the old tyres would not allow Carlos Sainz to run at a pace fast enough not to be cought by a charging Max Verstappen.

As a result Ferrari gave up track position for a new set of tyres. In hindsight, Carlos Sainz feels yhis may have cost him that first Formula 1 victory: “The strategy has been crucial and I think that without the last Safety Car it would have been difficult for him to pass me. I would have stayed out until the end and I wasn’t getting caught very fast either and I thought I could do it. Then the Safety Car came out and I had to stop. There I hesitated between the soft and the hard, if it could happen with one of the two wheels. We went very fast also putting a lot of pressure on Max, but not enough to pass the Red Bull.” – the Spanish driver concluded.
