Ahead of the final free practice session for the 2022 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, Scuderia Ferrari confirmed that Charles Leclerc has taken a completely new power unit, and will therefore start from the back of the grid in Sunday’s race at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal.
New ICE, MGU-H, MGU-K, EX & turbo for the Monegasque driver (fourth unit), who will therefore have to start the race from the back of the grid. The plan had already appeared clear enough after the first free practice sessions, when Charles Leclerc used new parts for all components except for the turbo, which has proved to be the real problem of this start of the 2022 Formula 1 season with two failures of the three elements available for the whole championship. The current top driver of the Prancing Horse, had concentrated almost exclusively on testing and evaluating the race pace since FP1, thus showing a very precise idea with an exclusive focus on Sunday’s GP.
There had been a lot of speculation that Ferrari would take this decision, at a track that provides plenty of overtaking opportunities. It’s not great news for Charles Leclerc’s world championship hopes, but it promises to add a thrilling layer to Sunday’s race for the fans!
