The opinion of the former Ferrari boss
Zero wins in the first ten races. Scuderia Ferrari started the 2025 season with the goal of fighting for both world championships, strengthened by the arrival of Lewis Hamilton, but the chances of ending a title drought that dates back to 2008 are currently very slim. Charles Leclerc, Ferrari’s highest-placed driver in the standings, trails Oscar Piastri by 94 points, while Ferrari is a massive 191 points behind McLaren, which has already outclassed its rivals in the Constructors’ Championship.
Speaking to the Italian magazine Autosprint, former Ferrari sporting director Cesare Fiorio emphasized that if he were in Fred Vasseur’s position, he would hand over the team’s leadership to Lewis Hamilton. “Fred Vasseur isn’t someone used to winning,” said Cesare Fiorio. “He has always fought for minor placings, and now he’s doing the same. I think he’s the wrong man in charge, although bringing Hamilton into the team was a smart move—he can provide a valuable contribution.”
Toto Wolff recently described Lewis Hamilton as “an Englishman parachuted into an all-Italian team,” and Cesare Fiorio echoed that sentiment, pointing out that Ferrari and Hamilton still need time to align properly. “Hamilton finds himself in a situation that is unfamiliar to him, but he still has tremendous potential. He can give the team insights and working methods that are extremely valuable. He’s the one who needs to show the way and help Ferrari take a step forward. He can be the team’s strength and Fred Vasseur’s lifeline—especially considering that Vasseur has yet to win anything.”
