McLaren is dominating the F1 World Championship. Mercedes and Ferrari are forced to chase. The fight for second place is intense. According to Charles Leclerc, however, Ferrari and Mercedes are very different from each other.
After 10 races, McLaren has built a lead of 175 points over Mercedes and 191 points over Ferrari. During the Spanish GP, the Maranello team had managed to climb to second place in the Constructors’ Championship. At the Canadian Grand Prix, however, thanks to George Russell’s victory and Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s third place, Mercedes reclaimed second place, helped also by the fifth and sixth places of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
Ferrari, aside from the Sprint race win in China, has yet to secure a race victory. Mercedes, on the other hand, managed to convert pole position into a win at the last Grand Prix. During the Canadian GP weekend, Charles Leclerc pointed out some differences between the Maranello team and Mercedes.
Mercedes vs Ferrari
According to Charles Leclerc, Mercedes and Ferrari have opposite problems. Specifically, the Monegasque driver admitted: “It’s strange, but we actually have opposite issues. I think they are strong in qualifying but struggle a bit in the race. We have our problems in qualifying but are quite good in race trim.” Charles Leclerc added: “I have the feeling that Mercedes has ups and downs, whereas we’re more or less consistently at the same gap from the top. Mercedes have had some very good weekends, but also races where they weren’t particularly competitive.” – the Monegasque driver pointed out.
Ferrari’s number #16 driver concluded with a brief mention of upcoming updates: “We are moving in the right direction, in small steps. But I can’t yet say where we’ll end up with our further developments.”
