Sunday’s comeback partially erased the disaster of the Imola qualifying. At Imola, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton’s SF-25s ended their Saturday in Q2, with a car that too often struggles on a single flying lap. While Imola allows for recovery in the race, the Monaco GP circuit does not: this is why Ferrari needs to fix qualifying pace and performance in slow corners, and the decision regarding the “updates” is a step back.
The SF-25 is unable to “switch on” the tyres during qualifying. The Maranello car demonstrated it once again during the weekend at Imola. The first European qualifying session of 2025 delivered a bitter Q2 elimination for the Prancing Horse, right in front of their fans.
Less than a week after Imola, the Circus and Ferrari face the Monaco GP. The narrow streets of the Principality represent the nemesis of the SF-25, which suffers particularly in slow corners and over a single lap — two of its main weaknesses.
Ferrari, “updates” for Monaco go back to the past
A firm “no” from Charles Leclerc’s words after the Imola comeback was his answer to a “Do you have hope for Monaco?” The Monegasque, well aware of the current limits of the 2025 car, is not expecting an easy weekend at his home circuit.
In an attempt to make Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton’s Monaco GP less uphill, Ferrari is trying to bring some “updates” from the past, as reported by the Italian daily newspaper Il Corriere della Sera. The Maranello-based team wants to avoid disaster in the crucial Monaco qualifying session. Ferrari will fit the SF-25 with the rear wing from the SF-24 — the one that performed so well a year ago.
Replicating the 2024 performance, when Charles Leclerc took pole position and then victory through the corners of the Principality, will likely be quite difficult. Nevertheless, Ferrari is not ready to wave the white flag and will try to assert itself in Monaco, if only to avoid being outpaced once again by Williams.
